Geoff King's study examines how players responded to Command and Conquer: Generals, drawing on 284 reviews, 184 from Amazon and 100 from GameSpot. Its central argument is that the experience of a game is multi-dimensional, and that players weigh gameplay, graphics, franchise continuity, narrative, technical performance, and geopolitical context in shifting combinations. Gameplay emerges as the dominant concern, addressed in roughly 58 percent of Amazon reviews and about 82 percent of GameSpot reviews, while graphics and comparisons with earlier entries in the series also feature prominently.
The geopolitical dimension, which in this case concerns the game's post-9/11 Middle East resonances and its depiction of the terrorist-aligned GLA faction, receives comparatively little explicit attention. Only about 9 to 12.5 percent of reviews name it directly, rising to roughly 21 to 31 percent when oblique references are included. Responses to these elements are divided: some players report feeling alienated by the portrayal of terrorism, while others dismiss the game's content as simply "just a game." The study concludes that real-world associations can intrude on escapism for some players, yet strong gameplay often outweighs such concerns, and that experienced players of the franchise tend to engage more with core mechanics and series comparisons than with external resonances.
The study also identifies notable differences between the two review constituencies. Roughly 31 percent of Amazon reviewers raised hardware or installation problems, compared with 7 to 9 percent on GameSpot, and story was cited about twice as often by GameSpot respondents. Although the samples are broadly similar in many respects, the author cautions that the variability and brevity of some reviews limit firm attribution of these differences to each platform's audience.
