Clayburger, a two-person Czech development studio, is currently developing Hopply, a mobile game distinguished by its unique aesthetic of handmade claymation graphics. The project utilizes a crowdsourced approach to character design, allowing players and audience members to contribute their own clay creations, which are then integrated into the game through an automated system. This collaborative feature aims to populate the game world with a diverse array of user-generated content.
The development process began last year after the team evaluated three initial concepts and selected the most feasible option for their debut title. As newcomers to the industry, the founders transitioned from long-term gaming enthusiasts to professional developers, balancing the project alongside other employment commitments. The primary challenge identified by the team was the initial decision to commit to independent game development, a shift that followed fifteen years of shared gaming history.
The studio attended Pocket Gamer Connects London 2016 to secure a publishing partner. Recognizing that their core expertise lies in technical development rather than marketing or distribution, the team sought professional guidance to navigate the complexities of bringing a niche, clay-animated title to the competitive mobile market. By leveraging industry events, the developers aim to bridge the gap between their creative vision and the logistical requirements of a successful commercial launch.
