Capcom’s financial performance for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2020, demonstrates a strategic shift toward high-margin digital distribution, resulting in record-high profits despite a year-over-year decline in net sales. The company reported net sales of 81.59 billion yen, down from 100.03 billion yen in the previous year, yet achieved an operating income of 22.83 billion yen. This marked the seventh consecutive year of operating profit growth, driven primarily by the Consumer sub-segment of the Digital Contents business, which saw its digital sales ratio climb to 76.8 percent.
The Digital Contents segment remained the primary revenue driver, bolstered by the successful release of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, which sold over 5 million units, and the continued long-term performance of Monster Hunter: World, which surpassed 15.5 million cumulative units. Strategic pricing initiatives for catalog titles further supported profitability, allowing the company to maintain total unit sales on par with the previous year despite a reduction in the number of new title releases.
Secondary business segments also contributed to the positive financial outcome. The Amusement Equipments segment returned to profitability with an operating income of 2.09 billion yen, largely due to the successful launch of the Shin Onimusha pachislo model. Simultaneously, the Arcade Operations segment saw steady growth, with same-store sales increasing by 3 percent and the addition of three new locations.
The company concluded the fiscal year with a strengthened balance sheet, reporting 65.66 billion yen in cash and deposits. With a return on equity of 16.9 percent and an annual dividend of 45 yen per share, the results aligned with revised management guidance, reflecting the effectiveness of prioritizing digital transformation and high-margin content over traditional physical retail volume.
