The launch of Candy Crush Friends Saga marked a significant milestone for King, as the title achieved over 10 million global downloads within its first week of release in October 2018. Following a year-long soft launch period, the game became the first new entry in the Candy Crush franchise since 2016. The analysis, based on Sensor Tower Store Intelligence data, highlights the game's immediate market penetration, including reaching the number one position on the App Store in 36 countries and on Google Play in 22 countries.
Despite the strong download figures, the title’s initial performance lagged behind its predecessors. The 10 million downloads represented approximately 77 percent of the first-week installs for Candy Crush Jelly Saga and 71 percent of those for Candy Crush Soda Saga. Furthermore, the revenue gap was more pronounced; the game grossed roughly $780,000 during its first seven days, significantly lower than the $1.7 million and $3.7 million generated by Jelly Saga and Soda Saga, respectively, during their comparable launch windows.
The lower initial metrics are attributed to the saturated state of the franchise, as the new title must compete for user attention against established, high-grossing entries like the original Candy Crush and Soda Saga. While the long-term success of the title remains to be seen, the global release reflects King’s confidence in the data gathered during the soft launch phase. This performance serves as a case study for developers navigating the challenges of serializing successful mobile gaming titles in a crowded market.
