The gaming division generated $29.8 billion for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026.
Sony’s fiscal year 2026 report highlights the financial performance of its gaming division, emphasizing a significant $766 million write-off associated with underperforming assets at Bungie. These impairments, occurring in two separate phases throughout the year, alongside an additional $117 million in capitalized development cost write-downs, hindered what would have otherwise been a record-breaking year for operating profit. Despite these setbacks, the gaming division’s operating profit still grew by 11.7% to 2.95 billion dollars.
The gaming division remains a primary revenue driver for the corporation, contributing 29.8 billion dollars—or 37.5% of total revenue—though year-over-year growth remained stagnant at 0.3%. Revenue streams shifted significantly, as game sales rose 5.3% to 16.8 billion dollars, with over half of that total derived from in-game purchases and DLC. Conversely, hardware sales faced a downturn, with PlayStation 5 console shipments falling 11% to 16 million units, resulting in a 16.6% decline in hardware revenue.
Performance metrics for the broader ecosystem show mixed results. While gaming services revenue increased by 13.9% to 4.87 billion dollars, monthly active users on the PlayStation Network reached 125 million, representing a slight year-over-year increase but a decline of 8 million users compared to the previous quarter. Total game sales for PlayStation 4 and 5 platforms reached 317.9 million units, a 4.8% increase, though first-party titles accounted for 32.1 million of those copies. The data reflects a strategic pivot toward service-based revenue models and digital content, even as the company navigates the challenges of hardware market saturation and the integration of acquired studios.
