Create free accounthello and welcome to the biz daily i'm john jordan so the news we're talking about today is um slightly speculative but um interesting nevertheless so uh we all know that uh fallout shelter has been kind of one of the big surprises of 2015 when it comes to mobile gaming um and uh while kind of bethesda the publisher has been fairly kind of tight-lipped really about the game um you kind of get the impression that its success has been as much a surprise to them as it has been to the rest of us um that doesn't mean that lots of other companies in the industry have been speculating about various aspects of the game success certainly um pocketgamer.biz we've been writing um articles um talking to our maidens about what their views on on it are whether the monetization is right whether it's a blueprint for other publishers to make
successful games it's an equally kind of having to think about um how it's how its success has happened around the world um how you know what its positions being in the top rowsing charts so yeah it's pretty straightforward now once you know um the chart position in various kind of countries the charts have been um kind of stable for a number of years now so you can kind of extrapolate if you were number one on the us iphone chart uh top crossing game for for a day can you kind of get an idea what revenue that will be so one of the companies that kind of predicts or uses this kind of data um to kind of it actually sells them to sells this data to kind of interesting companies is um super data um always quite bullish in its predictions um and always quite a keen i guess to um to make media statements and it kind of said in its own report for
june it's it reckoned um uh the fallout shelter had uh generated 5.1 million dollars um during during june so he came out at the start of june um he did pretty well for kind of two two to three weeks and then he's pretty much now has dropped out of the top 100 it actually pretty much dropped out of the top 200 in any of the in the big kind of western markets where it was performing well so that's the us kind of uk russia germany france australia all those kind of places is it's kind of well now well out the kind of the money positions um so that's kind of um you know i guess depending on your point of view and i get often these these kind of numbers kind of uh it kind of didn't really have their own context so it's very much on the kind of the eye of the beholder so kind of we could say maybe fullness shelter was generated kind of maybe six or seven million dollars um
probably uh in its lifetime um and some people that's a lot that's a lot of money clearly compared to the development cost of the game probably under half a million dollars then that's it's done like 10 times um kind of uh kind of uh not recovery but it is done ten times better than its um than its development costs and um there's not really been any marketing that anyone's seen really maybe maybe a bit of a bit of facebook news revolution stuff's been going on but basically that's a massive profitable project for bethesda but kind of the other view is that considering the amount of kind of press it's gotten the amount of hype the amount of people who've been playing it and the kind of positions it got in terms of top grossing so you got to number one it got number two number three in the uk and us top grossing which is very hard to break into um just because of the way the game was designed it doesn't have any multiplayer doesn't it doesn't really have it's not really game as a service that you can
kind of come to the end of it once you get to 200 people in your vault that's basically the game ends effectively um and there's yeah there's no kind of interaction there's not really any really significant updates there's been an update but nothing that's really kind of broken out the gameplay to another level so it's kind of quite a capped experience um and that kind of uh means that actually when you think about it maybe five six seven million dollars it actually isn't very much if you think a game like um can crush saga which is kind of a kind of interesting quote that um when when uh foreign came out within a couple of days it overtaken the candy crush saga in in the us chart and that seems like a big deal um did agree it was a big deal but obviously um kennegr is a billion dollar franchise that's a lifetime so i hope that's a much longer period of time it's been over a long time um but it's been successful in many more countries um and it's sustained that success and that's really in in this kind of current state where the industry is you need to sustain your success for more than two weeks so um
certainly i would say from my point of view you know five million six month isn't a lot of money um for a game that has been um kind of like burst on onto the scene um and obviously is the the reasons is bethesda and the developer behavior um didn't really expect the game to be successful otherwise they would have spent a bit more time and had these kind of updates and at least had some kind of multiplayer um or something multi some social kind of interaction that would kind of continue uh retention so um i guess it's just kind of like a like a warning i mean um everyone would be very happy with that success or wisconsin would be very happy with that success but equally um you know there's a few simple things that they could have thought about to just sustain that success a bit more instead of having two weeks at the top motion charts maybe two months and suddenly then you're getting into like 20 million dollars and that for any company that starts gets kind of be significant so anyway that's the news today um come back tomorrow and see what's been happening then see you then
you
Fallout Shelter emerged as a significant surprise in the 2015 mobile gaming landscape, achieving high rankings on Western top-grossing charts shortly after its release. Market intelligence firm Superdata estimated the title generated approximately $5.1 million during its initial two-week performance in June. While these figures represent a substantial return on investment—given that development costs were likely under $500,000—the game’s rapid decline from the top 200 charts in major markets like the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and France highlights the limitations of its design.
The discrepancy between the game's initial hype and its relatively short-lived financial dominance stems from its core structure. Unlike long-term, service-oriented titles such as Candy Crush Saga, Fallout Shelter lacks multiplayer functionality, social interaction, and a robust update cadence to drive player retention. Once players reach the game's capacity limit of 200 vault dwellers, the experience effectively concludes, capping its revenue potential. While the project is undeniably profitable for Bethesda, the lack of a "games-as-a-service" model prevented it from sustaining its early momentum.
Ultimately, the performance of Fallout Shelter serves as a case study in the mobile industry regarding the necessity of long-term engagement. Although the game achieved a ten-fold return on its development costs, industry analysts suggest that incorporating social features or consistent content updates could have extended its peak performance from weeks to months. This shift could have potentially quadrupled total revenue, underscoring that while initial chart-topping success is achievable, sustained profitability in the current mobile market requires a more deliberate approach to player retention and ongoing service development.
