It also aims to transition fans toward regulated platforms.
Riot Games has officially authorized sports betting sponsorships for Tier 1 League of Legends and VALORANT teams across the Americas and EMEA regions. This strategic shift aims to provide professional teams with diversified, high-margin revenue streams to support their financial sustainability within the competitive franchised-league landscape. The decision follows extensive internal analysis and responds to the growing demand for commercial partnerships that mirror the business models of traditional sports leagues.
The policy change is driven by the prevalence of unregulated betting activity, with Sportradar data indicating that global betting turnover on Riot’s titles reached $10.7 billion in 2024. Notably, 70% of these wagers occur in unregulated markets, posing significant integrity and consumer-protection risks. By formalizing partnerships with vetted, licensed operators, the organization intends to transition fans toward regulated platforms while implementing mandatory integrity programs, including the use of official data feeds provided by GRID.
To preserve the integrity of the viewing experience, Riot has implemented strict guardrails. Betting-related advertisements, sponsored segments, and team-jersey logos are prohibited on all Riot-owned broadcast channels and social media platforms. Individual teams retain the autonomy to manage betting-related content on their own channels, provided they adhere to local regulations and Riot’s internal standards. Furthermore, a portion of the revenue generated from this program will be reinvested into the broader esports ecosystem, specifically targeting prize pools, Tier 2 tournament development, and enhanced integrity-monitoring tools. This initiative represents a calculated effort to standardize esports betting while mitigating potential reputational risks.
