Annual downloads reached 11.8 billion, and ad revenues surpassed $3 billion.
Hypercasual remains one of mobile gaming's dominant forces heading into 2021, but the outlook points to a maturing segment under mounting pressure. The genre accounted for roughly 45% of 2019 mobile game downloads and grew downloads about 52% year over year in 2020, from 7.8 billion to 11.8 billion by one measure, while ad revenue doubled to more than $3 billion, making it the fourth-largest mobile genre. Voodoo grew downloads 52%, GameJam and Supersonic Studios posted the strongest gains, and Good Job Games, Say Games, and Ketchapp declined. UltraCasual and ASMR titles peaked in the first half of 2020, and Lion Studios turned misleading-ad concepts into hits such as Save the Girl and Pull Him Out, with roughly 140 million and 55 million downloads respectively.
Despite this growth, the analysis is skeptical about durability. Oversaturation, copycats, low lifetime values, minimal entry barriers, weak publisher staying power, mediation platforms moving into publishing, and poor traffic quality are all intensifying revenue-share competition. Apple's IDFA deprecation is the largest threat, potentially cutting CPMs by 30-50% and undermining the practice of selling high-quality users to IAP-driven games. IDFV-based cross-promotion helps only within a publisher's own portfolio, so the segment will survive but grow more slowly and lean on established publishers.
Hybridcasual, which pairs a hypercasual core with IAP and ad monetization and a simple linear metagame, is positioned as the main response, inspired by Archero. Most Archero clones failed, with the best earning just 0.6% of its revenue, because of overproduction, cloning, weak live operations, and CPIs of $5-10. Games with distinct mechanics, such as Mr. Autofire, surpassed $0.5 million in lifetime revenue and reached 20% of Archero's daily revenue in December, and Archero could be dethroned by July 2021.
The 2021 forecast calls for stagnating growth amid record-high CPIs and post-pandemic reopening, with summer declines and a year-end recovery. Four predictions follow: IDFA-driven CPM declines will force consolidation among top publishers; large publishers beyond Voodoo will expand through studio acquisitions or creation; hybridcasual will break through, reducing new game volume and extending hit lifespans from weeks to months; and Zynga's Rollic acquisition will be seen as a misfire, making buyers warier of hypercasual M&A.
