Consumer spending fell nearly one per cent from 2023, according to Circana (NPD) data with mobile figures from Sensor Tower.
US video game consumer spending totaled $58.7 billion in 2024, a decline of nearly one per cent from 2023, according to this analysis of market data from Circana (NPD) with mobile figures from Sensor Tower, covering December 30, 2023 to January 4, 2025. The headline finding is that growth in content spending across mobile, non-mobile subscription, and PC, cloud, and non-console VR segments offset an 11 per cent drop in console content spending. Video game content remained the dominant revenue category at $50.64 billion, up two per cent year over year and the second-highest figure in US history after 2021.
Hardware was the weakest segment, falling 25 per cent from $6.45 billion to $4.85 billion. PlayStation 5 led the market in both revenue and units sold, while Xbox Series ranked second in revenue and Switch second in units. Digital-only editions accounted for 45 per cent of PlayStation 5 and 44 per cent of Xbox console unit sales. Accessories grew six per cent to $3.17 billion, with the PlayStation Portal Player leading in consumer spending.
The top-selling title list is headed by Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, with EA Sports College Football 25 ranking second and described as the best-selling sports video game in US history by full-game dollar sales. Call of Duty was also named the best-selling franchise for a record 16th consecutive year. The rankings cover physical and full-game digital sales across Nintendo eShop, PlayStation, Steam, and Xbox for participating publishers, excluding add-on spending, and several titles are noted as lacking digital data for part of the year.
