Thunderful Group has finalized its strategic transformation into a pure-play video game entity, marking a definitive exit from its legacy distribution operations. This transition, which included the divestment of businesses such as AMO Toys and Bergsala, serves as the foundation for a streamlined operational model focused exclusively on publishing and co-development. By shedding non-core assets, the company aims to stabilize its business, though the immediate financial impact of this restructuring has been substantial.
Financial performance for the second quarter of 2024 reflects significant volatility, with net revenue declining to 83.1 MSEK from 97.2 MSEK in the same period last year. The company recorded an operating loss of 60.3 MSEK, exacerbated by a 31.4 MSEK write-down of capitalized development costs and a negative adjusted EBITA of -44.9 MSEK. These results were further compounded by a total quarterly loss of 162.2 MSEK, largely attributed to the costs associated with discontinued operations and a more conservative, rigorous approach to asset valuation and investment.
In response to these challenges, management has implemented a 20% reduction in headcount and adopted a stricter capitalization policy to improve long-term fiscal health. While the company maintains that current financing remains sufficient for ongoing operations, the board has officially withdrawn all previous financial targets. Future growth will depend on the success of a more selective investment strategy within the publishing segment, as the organization seeks to establish new long-term objectives following the completion of its corporate reorganization.
