Thunderful Group faced a period of significant financial contraction during the first quarter of 2024, characterized by a 27.7 percent year-over-year decline in net revenue to 391.7 million SEK. This downturn resulted in an operating loss of 184.4 million SEK and a net loss of 236.2 million SEK. The performance was heavily impacted by a 72.4 million SEK write-down of capitalized development costs, alongside negative adjusted EBITDA margins across both the Games and Distribution segments. Consequently, the group’s adjusted EBITDA plummeted to -28.9 million SEK, down from 72.6 million SEK in the same period of the previous year, while the interest-bearing net debt to adjusted EBITDA ratio rose to 4.6.
To stabilize its financial position and improve long-term cash flow, the company is executing a comprehensive restructuring program projected to yield annual cost savings between 90 and 110 million SEK. This strategic pivot involves a simplification of the core games strategy and the divestment of key subsidiaries, specifically Nordic Game Supply and Headup GmbH. These divestments are critical components of a broader plan to satisfy conditions for a bank waiver, as the organization seeks to navigate its current liquidity pressures and restore operational efficiency.
These results reflect a challenging start to the 2024 fiscal year for the Sweden-based group, highlighting the volatility inherent in its current portfolio. By narrowing its operational focus and aggressively reducing its cost base, the company aims to mitigate the impact of its recent losses and address the elevated debt levels that currently constrain its financial flexibility. The ongoing transition marks a decisive shift toward a leaner business model intended to prioritize profitability over the broader, more capital-intensive structure maintained in previous periods.
