These theories equate the player directly with their avatar.
Key issue. Equating players directly with avatars does not account for interactive storytelling mechanics.
Video game narratives operate through a complex metaphysical structure that transcends simple identification between the user and their avatar. Traditional theories, which posit that players merely imagine themselves as the characters they control, fail to account for the unique mechanics of interactive storytelling. Specifically, these models struggle to reconcile the epistemic gap between player knowledge and avatar mental states, the necessity of failing and repeating sequences, and the exploratory nature of navigating counterfactual narrative paths. By equating the player directly with the avatar, existing frameworks overlook the fundamental ways games structure agency and narrative progression.
To address these limitations, a new analytical framework defines the player as a fictional entity that functions as a metaphysical agent. This fictional player operates within a possibility structure, actualizing specific events from a range of probabilistic outcomes provided by the game’s design. This distinction between the player and the avatar allows for a more coherent understanding of how games manage narrative consistency. By positioning the player as the grounding force for these possibilities, the model effectively explains how diverse narrative events remain unified despite the non-linear and often repetitive nature of gameplay.
This approach establishes video games as a distinct and innovative narrative form that requires a specialized ontological lens. By shifting the focus from avatar identification to the role of the fictional player, this framework provides a robust method for analyzing how interactive media represent possibility and agency. Ultimately, this perspective offers a more comprehensive explanation for the mechanics of player-avatar relations, suggesting that the unique structure of video games warrants continued academic investigation into how they construct and deliver complex fictional experiences.
