Videogame cognitivism establishes a philosophical framework asserting that interactive digital media serve as legitimate sources of cognitive success, including knowledge, true beliefs, and conceptual understanding. By positioning videogames as a domain-specific branch of aesthetic cognitivism, this perspective argues that the medium’s unique combination of ludic mechanics and fictional narratives allows players to derive meaningful insights about the external world. To qualify as epistemically valuable, these insights must satisfy both a referential constraint, linking game content to real-world phenomena, and a content requirement, ensuring the knowledge originates from the game’s specific structural properties.
The epistemic value of games is analyzed through three primary lenses: propositionalism, experientialism, and neocognitivism. Propositionalism suggests that games convey factual truths, while experientialism highlights the unique capacity of games to simulate perspectives and emotions, providing players with direct experiential knowledge. However, neocognitivism emerges as the most robust defense, shifting the focus from the acquisition of discrete facts to the cultivation of deep understanding. By functioning as ethical sandboxes, games enable players to navigate complex moral dilemmas and refine their conceptual frameworks through the exploration of explanatory relations.
While critics often cite the lack of explicit claims or the potential triviality of insights as barriers to the medium’s epistemic legitimacy, these challenges are mitigated by the implicit mechanics inherent in play. Games like Fallout 4 demonstrate how interactive scenarios prompt critical inquiry into abstract concepts such as artificial intelligence and personhood. Ultimately, videogames function as sophisticated cognitive tools that sharpen a player’s discriminatory powers, encouraging reflection and the assessment of conflicting viewpoints in ways that parallel traditional art forms. This framework provides a comprehensive justification for recognizing commercial videogames as significant contributors to human knowledge and intellectual development.
