How To Market A Game
Despite this performance, a game at the 68th percentile still remains in the lowest revenue tier.
The indie game market on Steam is characterized by extreme revenue disparity, where the vast majority of titles generate minimal income. An analysis of games released in 2019 reveals that the median title earned only $1,136 in lifetime gross revenue. This data highlights the difficulty of achieving a sustainable, middle-class income through independent game development, as the market follows a "hockey stick" distribution where only a small fraction of games capture the majority of earnings.
To categorize performance, revenue is divided into four tiers: Bronze ($0–$10,000), Silver ($10,001–$249,000), Gold ($250,000–$999,999), and Diamond ($1 million+). A game earning $10,000 sits in the 68th percentile, meaning it outperforms nearly three-quarters of all releases yet remains in the lowest tier. The "Gold" threshold of $250,000 serves as a critical fulcrum for Steam’s algorithm, as reaching this level is often a prerequisite for increased visibility and potential front-page featuring from Valve. Consequently, only the top 4% of games reach the Diamond tier.
The methodology for these findings relies on 2019 release data sourced from Video Games Insights, excluding free-to-play titles to ensure accurate revenue estimation. The year 2019 was selected to provide a mature dataset that accounts for the long-term revenue accumulation of successful titles under the current Steam algorithm. Ultimately, the findings suggest that developers should manage expectations by starting with smaller projects, as consistent success is rarely achieved with a debut title. Instead, developers are encouraged to treat early releases as learning opportunities to build the expertise required to eventually reach higher performance percentiles.
