Total divisional revenue reached 1.6 trillion yen ($10 billion) in the October-December 2025 quarter.
Sony Corporation’s financial results for the fourth quarter of 2025 reveal a complex performance within its gaming division, characterized by a shift from hardware-driven revenue toward software and service-based growth. While total divisional revenue experienced a 4% year-over-year decline to 1.6 trillion yen (approximately $10 billion), the company achieved a 19% increase in operating profit, reaching 140.8 billion yen ($897 million). This divergence highlights a successful transition toward higher-margin digital engagement despite cooling hardware demand.
The primary driver for the revenue decline was a 23% drop in hardware sales, which totaled 450.4 billion yen ($2.87 billion). During this period, Sony sold 8 million PlayStation 5 units, bringing the console's cumulative lifetime sales to 92.2 million units. Conversely, the software and services segments demonstrated resilience and growth. Revenue from game sales rose by 6.5% to 835.5 billion yen ($5.32 billion), with microtransactions and in-game purchases accounting for half of that total. Additionally, revenue from gaming services, including the PlayStation Network, PlayStation Plus, and advertising, grew by 12.6% to 199.3 billion yen ($1.27 billion).
A significant milestone for the company was the record-breaking engagement on the PlayStation Network, which reached 132 million monthly active users in December 2025. This peak in user activity underscores the platform's sustained reach. Total software sales for the quarter reached 97.2 million copies, with Sony’s first-party titles contributing 13.2 million units to that figure. These results reflect a strategic pivot where the company is increasingly leveraging its massive, active user base to drive recurring revenue through digital ecosystems and services, effectively offsetting the cyclical downturn in console hardware sales.
