Tencent’s 2022 financial results reveal a historic turning point for the company, which recorded its first annual revenue decline since going public in 2004. Total annual revenue reached 554.6 billion yuan ($79.6 billion), representing a 1% year-over-year decrease. Profitability metrics also faced downward pressure, with operating profit falling 13% to 235.7 billion yuan ($33.8 billion) and net profit declining 17% to 188.7 billion yuan ($27 billion).
The gaming division, which accounted for 43% of the company's total revenue, experienced a bifurcated performance across geographic markets. Domestic gaming revenue contracted by 4% to 123.9 billion yuan ($17.7 billion), driven by titles such as Honor of Kings, Dungeon Fighter Online, and Undawn. Conversely, the international gaming segment demonstrated resilience, growing 3% to 46.8 billion yuan ($6.7 billion). This growth was fueled by the strong performance of established franchises including League of Legends, Valorant, PUBG Mobile, and Call of Duty: Mobile, alongside successful new releases like NIKKE and Darktide.
Looking ahead, the company’s strategic focus remains centered on high-potential genres and the expansion of intellectual property. Future initiatives include the adaptation of major PC and console franchises for mobile platforms and the continued development of in-house titles. By prioritizing global franchise publishing and leveraging existing popular IPs, the company aims to stabilize its gaming portfolio following the challenging fiscal environment of 2022.
