The company has ended a seven-year tradition of physical events for its annual Global Esports Summit.
Tencent Holdings has officially canceled its in-person Global Esports Summit for 2024, marking a significant departure from the event's seven-year history. In place of the traditional physical gathering, the company hosted an online live conference titled Empower Esports Worldwide. This shift reflects a broader strategic pivot within the organization as it seeks more efficient methods for industry communication and engagement in response to evolving market trends.
The Global Esports Summit, which began in 2017, previously served as a primary venue for Tencent to announce major strategic plans for its prominent esports titles, including League of Legends, Honor of Kings, Peacekeeper Elite, CrossFire, and Call of Duty Mobile. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the company maintained the event's in-person format in locations such as Hainan and Hangzhou. The transition to a digital-only format for 2024 underscores a change in how the Chinese conglomerate manages its global esports footprint and stakeholder relations.
While the move to a virtual format suggests a focus on operational efficiency, it represents a notable reduction in the scale of one of the industry's most significant annual summits. By moving away from a physical presence, Tencent is signaling a reevaluation of its event strategy, prioritizing streamlined digital outreach over the traditional, large-scale industry gatherings that have characterized its esports operations since 2017.
