The transition was completed rapidly, taking approximately three months from initial exploration to finalization. This move aligns with the studio's focus on its upcoming title.
Spry Fox has officially transitioned back to an independent studio following an amicable spin-out from Netflix, which acquired the developer in 2022. This strategic move aligns with the studio’s focus on its upcoming title, Spirit Crossing, a social-oriented game that the leadership team believes will achieve greater success as a cross-platform release rather than remaining exclusive to the Netflix subscriber ecosystem. The spin-out process was completed rapidly, spanning approximately three months from initial exploration to finalization.
To ensure the studio’s financial viability during this transition, co-founders David Edery and Daniel Cook have reduced their annual salaries to $20,000. The studio has also reinstated a needs-based compensation model, which allows employees to determine their own salary requirements based on personal living expenses. While the transition necessitated some staff reductions, the studio continues to support those affected. Approximately 50 people, including contractors, are currently dedicated to the development of Spirit Crossing, which is scheduled for a public beta in the spring of 2026 and a full release later that year.
The studio’s leadership emphasizes that maintaining strong, trust-based relationships with a broad range of personnel within a parent company is critical for navigating corporate uncertainty. By fostering connections beyond executive leadership, studios can better position themselves to manage organizational shifts, such as potential closures or divestments. This approach serves as a broader lesson for independent developers operating within large, complex corporate structures, where internal dynamics and shifting strategic priorities can significantly impact a studio's long-term stability and autonomy.
