The company's gaming segment saw a 40% year-over-year increase in revenue, reaching $8.4 billion. Operating income also rose by 50% to $760 million.
Sony’s gaming division experienced significant financial growth during the third quarter of fiscal year 2020, ending December 31, 2020. During this period, the company achieved record-breaking performance with revenue reaching $8.4 billion, a 40% year-over-year increase, and operating income rising 50% to $760 million. This growth was driven by strong software sales, which totaled $4.6 billion, supplemented by $2.4 billion in add-on content revenue.
Hardware performance was highlighted by the successful launch of the PlayStation 5, which reached 4.5 million units sold within its first two months. While the company sold these units at a loss, it projected sales to reach 7.6 million by March 2021. Conversely, demand for the PlayStation 4 declined by 77% year-over-year, though the console still moved 1.4 million units. Engagement metrics remained robust, with 47.4 million PlayStation Plus subscribers and 114 million monthly active users on the PlayStation Network.
In a separate development, Sony faces ongoing legal scrutiny regarding its digital marketplace practices. A class-action lawsuit initiated by the Dutch organization Stichting Massaschade & Consument, and later joined by the Stop Killing Games initiative, alleges that Sony artificially inflated prices in the PlayStation Store. Plaintiffs claim that digital games were priced 47% higher than physical editions, resulting in approximately 435 million euros in consumer overpayments in the Netherlands since 2013. The lawsuit seeks compensation for affected users and demands the introduction of competitive alternatives to the PlayStation Store, particularly in light of Sony’s planned cessation of physical disc production by 2028.
