Dungeons & Dragons functions as a powerful psychosocial intervention that fosters mental well-being through five core pillars: escapism, self-exploration, creative expression, social support, and routine. By providing a structured, immersive environment, the game allows participants to navigate life stressors, process trauma, and develop emotional regulation. Players frequently utilize their in-game characters as conduits for identity exploration, experiencing positive psychological bleed that translates into increased real-world confidence and improved social efficacy.
The therapeutic utility of the game relies heavily on the establishment of a safe, collaborative space. The integration of safety mechanics and pre-game alignment sessions, such as Session 0, is essential to mitigate interpersonal conflict and prevent the misuse of escapism as an avoidant behavior. When facilitated correctly, the game acts as a consistent social safety net, offering a unique blend of creative agency and communal stability that effectively combats loneliness and emotional stagnation.
While the findings highlight the transformative potential of tabletop role-playing games, this research serves as a qualitative foundation rather than a clinical prescription. The study emphasizes that these gaming experiences should function as a complement to, rather than a replacement for, traditional mental health services. Future efforts should focus on expanding these therapeutic gaming models to more diverse global populations to validate these benefits beyond the current participant base. Ultimately, the collaborative storytelling inherent in the game provides a scalable, accessible framework for personal development and emotional resilience in an increasingly fragmented social landscape.
