This strategic shift means traditional, centralized English coverage is suspended. The move signals a focus on decentralized, community-led broadcasting.

Riot Games has officially transitioned the English-language broadcast of China’s League of Legends Pro League (LPL) to a co-streaming-only model. This strategic shift effectively suspends traditional, centralized English coverage, signaling a move toward decentralized community-led broadcasting. To support this transition, the organization plans to provide clean feeds featuring only in-game audio, alongside potential options for co-streamed video-on-demand content.
The decision reflects broader trends in esports viewership, where co-streaming has become a dominant force. Data indicates that co-streaming accounted for 25% of total regional league viewership for League of Legends in 2024. Specifically for the LPL, official channels captured only 29.4% of non-Chinese viewership, while 70.6% was generated through co-streaming efforts. Individual content creators, such as former professional player Marc “Caedrel” Lamont, have emerged as primary drivers of this engagement, accounting for 18.4% of the total viewership alone.
Operational and financial pressures appear to be primary catalysts for this change. Maintaining a dedicated English-language production team involves significant expenses, including talent salaries and complex international logistics. Historical data from 2021 suggests that on-air talent for the English broadcast received monthly salaries of approximately $8,282 USD. Furthermore, persistent challenges regarding international payment processing and strict financial regulations between China and Western nations have complicated the management of foreign staff. By shifting to a co-streaming model, the league aims to mitigate these operational hurdles while leveraging the growing influence of independent creators to maintain international audience reach.
