Riot Games has created a new role, President of Publishing & Esports, and appointed John Needham to lead it. He will oversee a unified department.
Riot Games has initiated a strategic organizational restructuring to better integrate its gaming, esports, music, and storytelling divisions. Central to this shift is the promotion of John Needham, formerly the president of esports, to the newly created role of president of publishing and esports. In this expanded capacity, Needham will oversee a unified department encompassing international operations, platform technology, music, publishing, and esports, aiming to create more cohesive and immersive experiences for the company’s player base.
Beyond leadership changes, the company is formalizing its commitment to multimedia expansion by establishing dedicated internal studios for animation and live-action projects. These divisions are tasked with developing film and television content that extends beyond the success of the animated series Arcane. Christian Linke will lead the animation studio, continuing his work on animated properties, while Brian Wright, a former Netflix executive, has been appointed to head the live-action studio.
This reorganization reflects a broader effort by Riot Games to align its internal structure with its long-term goal of blending diverse entertainment verticals into a singular, unified brand ecosystem. By consolidating leadership under Needham and creating specialized production units, the company intends to streamline its creative output and enhance player engagement across its global portfolio of titles, including League of Legends and Valorant.
