GFR Fund
This represents the highest quarterly total since Q2 2022.
The venture capital landscape in the first quarter of 2025 was defined by a significant concentration of capital into fewer, high-conviction investments, primarily driven by the artificial intelligence sector. Global funding reached $120.9 billion, marking the highest quarterly total since mid-2022. Despite this surge in capital, overall deal volume declined to 5,846 transactions, the lowest level in five years. This divergence underscores a market shift toward larger, more selective bets, with mega-rounds of $100 million or more accounting for 70% of all deployed capital.
Artificial intelligence emerged as the dominant investment theme, capturing 20% of all venture deals—a record high. The sector’s influence was further evidenced by the rise in early-stage mega-rounds, as investors increasingly committed substantial capital to startups early in their lifecycles. Concurrently, the median early-stage deal size climbed to a record $2.7 million. The quarter also saw a historic surge in liquidity, with 12 billion-dollar M&A exits, including the record-setting $33 billion acquisition of Wiz by Google, providing a much-needed boost to the exit environment.
Geographically, the United States maintained its lead in the venture ecosystem, accounting for 92 of the 145 global mega-deals and 13 of the 20 new unicorns minted during the quarter. While the period began with strong optimism regarding public markets and exit opportunities, macroeconomic uncertainty—precipitated by new tariff policies and shifting monetary outlooks—emerged by early April. Consequently, while Q1 demonstrated robust activity, the outlook for the remainder of the year suggests a potential slowdown in funding, prompting a cautious approach for founders currently navigating the fundraising process.
