Global player spending reached $167 million in July 2019.
PUBG Mobile has established itself as the world’s highest-grossing mobile battle royale title, driven by significant year-over-year revenue growth and a successful monetization strategy in China. As of August 2019, the game secured the top position among all mobile games globally for three consecutive months. This performance is largely attributed to the relaunch of the title in China as Game for Peace, which rapidly contributed to the game's total lifetime earnings.
Financial data indicates that global player spending reached a record $167 million in July 2019, representing a 748 percent increase compared to the $46 million generated in July 2018. Within just 60 days of its Chinese relaunch, the market accounted for $241 million of the game’s $860 million in total lifetime revenue. Growth is also evident in the United States, where revenue rose 565 percent year-over-year to $32 million. These figures place the title ahead of major competitors like Fortnite and Knives Out in both monthly and cumulative lifetime earnings.
The analysis, based on Store Intelligence data, highlights that Tencent’s consistent cadence of content updates and the implementation of season pass events have been critical to sustaining this momentum. By effectively transitioning from a non-monetized state to a high-revenue model in China, the title has outperformed its rivals by a factor of five in monthly revenue. The findings suggest that this strategic approach serves as a benchmark for other developers seeking to maximize engagement and monetization within the mobile battle royale segment.
