The game achieved this milestone as of September 2020. This solidifies its position as a dominant force in the mobile battle royale genre.
PUBG Mobile has solidified its position as a dominant force in the mobile battle royale genre, surpassing $3.5 billion in lifetime player spending as of September 2020. The title achieved a significant milestone by generating $500 million in just 72 days, contributing to a total of $1.8 billion in revenue accumulated during the first eight months of 2020 alone. This growth was bolstered by increased global engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic and the strong performance of the game’s Chinese localization, Game For Peace.
The analysis, based on Sensor Tower Store Intelligence data, highlights a clear geographic disparity in monetization and adoption. China remains the primary revenue driver, accounting for 53 percent of total spending, followed by the United States and Japan. Conversely, India represents the largest market for downloads, contributing 185.5 million installs, or 24 percent of the global total. Despite a government-imposed ban in India in September 2020, the impact on global revenue is expected to be limited, as the region accounts for only 1.2 percent of total player spending.
Platform distribution reveals that the Apple App Store generates 80 percent of global revenue, while Google Play accounts for 65.3 percent of total downloads. When excluding the Chinese market, the revenue split between platforms narrows, with the App Store capturing 57 percent and Google Play 43 percent. As of mid-2020, PUBG Mobile maintained its status as the top-grossing mobile battle royale game worldwide, outperforming competitors such as Garena Free Fire, Knives Out, Fortnite, and Call of Duty: Mobile.
