In its first month, PUBG Mobile maintained a top-two position on the Korean App Store's free download chart.
This analysis examines the initial 30-day performance of PUBG Mobile following its launch in the Japanese and South Korean mobile markets in mid-2018. The study utilizes App Store download and revenue rankings to compare the title’s reception against established competitors, specifically NetEase’s Knives Out. The primary objective is to evaluate market penetration and monetization trends for the battle royale genre in these two distinct East Asian territories.
Data indicates that PUBG Mobile experienced significantly higher engagement in South Korea, where it maintained a top-two position on the iOS free download chart throughout its first month. In contrast, the Japanese market showed a marked decline in download rankings after an initial two-week period. Monetization trends mirrored this disparity; South Korean players consistently drove higher revenue, with the app’s daily grossing rank hovering around the 50th position, whereas in Japan, the title fell outside the top 100 in revenue rankings by late May.
The Japanese market remains dominated by Knives Out, which maintained a top-five revenue position during the same period, seemingly unaffected by the entry of PUBG Mobile. While the initial download trajectories of the two titles in Japan were comparable, PUBG Mobile’s revenue performance lagged behind the early growth patterns observed for Knives Out. Despite these early challenges in Japan, the analysis suggests that the strength of the original intellectual property provides a foundation for potential long-term growth, even as the title faces stiff competition from established incumbents.
