Revenue Impact. Pokémon GO’s Gen 2 update generated an average of $1.6 million in daily iOS revenue.
The release of the "Gen 2" update for Pokémon GO in February 2017 failed to generate the same level of financial performance as previous in-game events. Data from the iOS App Store indicates that the update, which introduced new creatures to the game, resulted in an average daily revenue of $1.6 million between February 21 and 25. This figure trailed behind the performance of the game’s Halloween and Christmas/New Year’s events, which saw average daily revenues of $2.3 million and $2 million, respectively.
Beyond raw revenue, the update demonstrated a decline in market reach. In the days following the Gen 2 launch, Pokémon GO achieved the status of the top-grossing iPhone app in 11 countries. By comparison, the Halloween event secured the top position in 27 countries, while the holiday event reached number one in 19 countries. These metrics suggest that simply adding new content may be insufficient to sustain long-term player engagement and spending.
The analysis attributes this performance gap to several factors, including the absence of core gameplay features like player-versus-player battling and trading, as well as the impact of winter weather on a game that relies on outdoor physical activity. Despite these challenges, the update did allow the game to reclaim the top-grossing spot on the U.S. App Store for three consecutive days, marking its best U.S. performance since early January. The findings suggest that while the game remains a significant revenue generator, future growth will likely depend on the introduction of more substantial gameplay mechanics and seasonal engagement strategies.
