The game maintains its position as a leader in location-based mobile gaming.
Pokémon GO has solidified its position as the dominant force in the location-based mobile gaming sector, surpassing $3.6 billion in lifetime global player spending as of its four-year anniversary in July 2020. Despite the emergence of regional competitors like Dragon Quest Walk, no other title in the genre has achieved comparable global scale or sustained financial performance. The game’s longevity is underscored by its 2019 performance, which set a new annual record of $905 million in player spending, surpassing the initial surge experienced during its 2016 launch year.
Financial data indicates that the United States is the most lucrative market, contributing approximately $1.3 billion, or 35.4 percent of total revenue. Globally, Google Play accounts for 53.6 percent of revenue, while the App Store represents 46.4 percent. In terms of user acquisition, the title has reached 576.7 million unique downloads, with the United States, Brazil, and Mexico serving as the top three markets for installs. Google Play dominates the download share at 78.3 percent, compared to 21.7 percent on the App Store.
The analysis, based on Sensor Tower Store Intelligence data, highlights the game's resilience during the first half of 2020. Despite the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the title generated $445.3 million in the first six months of the year, putting it on track to match or exceed its 2019 record. This performance is attributed to Niantic’s strategic implementation of stay-at-home features, which allowed the game to maintain engagement and revenue growth even when traditional location-based movement was restricted. These findings confirm that the title has evolved beyond its initial launch-period popularity into a consistent, high-performing pillar of the mobile gaming industry.
