PlayVS is expanding its scholastic esports platform to include middle schools across the United States, beginning in the Fall 2024 season. This strategic move aims to foster community, teamwork, and skill development among younger students, potentially serving as a pipeline for future STEM careers and higher-level competitive play. By entering the middle school market, the company effectively doubles its potential reach, adding over 36,000 institutions to its existing network of 68,000 schools.
The new middle school leagues are designed to be free-to-play and cooperative, emphasizing a casual environment rather than high-pressure competition. While specific game titles have not been disclosed, the selection is expected to align with age-appropriate ESRB ratings of E or T for Teen. The league structure will consist of a two-week preseason followed by an 11-week regular season, providing a longer engagement period than the company’s established high school programs.
This expansion follows a significant shift in the company's business model implemented in late 2023. By eliminating participation fees for students and schools—previously set at approximately $80 per student per season—and transitioning to a sponsorship and partnership-based revenue model, the organization has lowered the barrier to entry for scholastic institutions. This financial restructuring is intended to facilitate broader adoption of esports programs within the North American education sector.
