Riot Games has finalized the distribution of $4.5 million in charitable funding for 2023, a process driven by direct player participation. This initiative is part of the broader Riot Games Social Impact Fund, which has successfully raised $50 million since its inception in 2019 through in-game item and content sales across titles such as League of Legends, Valorant, and Teamfight Tactics.
The allocation process involved a global voting campaign where players across 28 regions selected local nonprofit organizations to receive financial support. In each region, three charities were presented for consideration, covering diverse social causes including climate change, education, and gender equality. The voting mechanism ensured that the top-voted organization in each region received 50% of the regional pool, while the remaining two organizations each received 25%. All participating nonprofits were guaranteed a minimum donation of $10,000.
The 2023 campaign saw significant engagement, with approximately 589,000 votes cast by players worldwide. By partnering with GlobalGiving to facilitate these donations, the program emphasizes a community-led approach to corporate philanthropy. This model allows the player base to influence the real-world impact of their in-game spending, reinforcing the company's commitment to leveraging its gaming ecosystem for global social responsibility.
