Distilling the key insights…
Nintendo’s consolidated financial results for the nine-month period ending December 31, 2012, reflect a transitional phase characterized by the launch of the Wii U home console and the continued expansion of the Nintendo 3DS handheld platform. During this period, the company reported net sales of 543 billion yen, a 2.4% decrease compared to the same period in 2011. Despite an operating loss of 5.8 billion yen—attributed largely to the initial costs associated with the Wii U hardware rollout—the company achieved an ordinary income of 22.7 billion yen and a net income of 14.5 billion yen, bolstered by significant exchange gains resulting from the depreciation of the yen toward the end of the calendar year.
The company’s hardware performance was mixed across its product segments. The Nintendo 3DS saw strong momentum, with worldwide sales reaching 12.71 million hardware units and 39.56 million software units, driven by the release of the 3DS XL and popular titles such as New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Conversely, the Nintendo DS segment experienced a sharp decline as consumers transitioned to newer handheld technology, and the legacy Wii system saw reduced sales due to a limited release schedule. The newly launched Wii U recorded 3.06 million hardware units and 11.69 million software units during its initial months on the market.
Geographically, the Americas remained the largest market, accounting for 37% of total sales, followed by Japan at 33.6% and Europe at 26.3%. The company maintained a strong financial position with total assets of 1.59 trillion yen and a capital adequacy ratio of 76.1%. Moving forward, management has revised its full-year forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2013, anticipating net sales of 670 billion yen and a net income of 14 billion yen.
