Nintendo’s financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, reflect a period of moderate growth that is now transitioning into a projected downturn. The company reported net revenue of ¥1.67 trillion, a 4.4% year-over-year increase, alongside a 4.9% rise in operating profit to ¥528.9 billion and a 13.4% increase in net profit to ¥490.6 billion. Despite these gains, the company has issued a conservative outlook for the 2025 fiscal year, forecasting a 19.3% decline in net sales and a 38.9% drop in net profit as the Nintendo Switch platform enters its eighth year of market availability.
The geographic distribution of revenue remains heavily weighted toward international markets, with 78.3% of sales generated outside of Japan, led by the Americas at 44.3%. Digital sales continue to be a significant revenue driver, accounting for 50.2% of total video game revenue, representing a 9.4% year-over-year increase. While the company achieved a record 123 million annual playing users, hardware sales for the Switch declined by 12.6% to 15.7 million units, and total software sales fell by 6.7% to 199.67 million copies.
Looking ahead, the company acknowledges the difficulty of maintaining previous sales momentum for the aging Switch hardware. While the platform has reached a cumulative 141.32 million units sold, management has confirmed that an announcement regarding a successor console will occur within the current fiscal year. In the interim, the focus remains on sustaining user engagement through software releases, with 31 titles achieving over 1 million units sold during the previous fiscal year, led by strong performances from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
