Nintendo
Nintendo’s consolidated financial results for the nine months ended December 31, 2023, demonstrate sustained profitability and growth in the seventh year of the Nintendo Switch platform’s lifecycle. The company reported net sales of 1,394.7 billion yen, representing a 7.7% increase over the same period in the previous fiscal year. Operating profit rose by 13.1% to 464.4 billion yen, while profit attributable to owners of the parent reached 408.0 billion yen, an increase of 17.9%. These results were bolstered by strong software performance, the expansion of digital sales, and significant revenue growth in the mobile and intellectual property segment.
Key performance drivers included the successful launch of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which sold 11.96 million units, and the continued popularity of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Pikmin 4. Additionally, the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie provided a substantial boost to the mobile and IP-related business, which saw sales surge 93.4% year-on-year to 75.2 billion yen. Digital sales for the platform also grew by 11.7% to 346.4 billion yen, aided by favorable foreign exchange rates. While hardware sales experienced a slight decline of 7.8% to 13.74 million units, the company maintains a strategy of maximizing engagement through a continuous pipeline of new software and add-on content.
Geographically, the company remains heavily reliant on international markets, with 78.7% of total sales generated outside of Japan. As of December 31, 2023, Nintendo reported a strong financial position with total assets of 3,073.7 billion yen and a capital adequacy ratio of 80.6%. Based on these performance metrics, the company has revised its full-year financial forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2024, projecting net sales of 1,630 billion yen and an operating profit of 510 billion yen.
