Reinstatement Vote. The IESF voted to reinstate Russian athletes for 2024 competitions, allowing them to compete under their national flag and anthem.
The International Esports Federation (IESF) faced significant backlash in August 2023 following its decision to reinstate the Russian Esports Federation, allowing Russian athletes to compete under their national flag and anthem starting in 2024. This move reversed previous sanctions imposed due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. According to the IESF, the decision was reached during its Annual General Meeting in Iași, Romania, where 32 delegates voted in favor of the motion, 13 voted against, and 25 abstained.
The reinstatement triggered immediate protests from the international esports community. The Ukrainian Esports Federation withdrew its national CS:GO and Dota 2 teams from the 2023 World Esports Championship in response to the vote. This protest was subsequently joined by 13 other national federations, including those from France, Sweden, Finland, Canada, and the Netherlands, which publicly condemned the IESF’s decision. Critics, such as the Finnish Esports Federation, argued that the move rewarded the Russian federation despite its continued involvement in occupied Ukrainian territories.
In its defense, the IESF maintained that the vote was a democratic process conducted by its member federations. The organization emphasized that its primary focus remains the protection and support of athletes, asserting that sport should serve as a platform for peacebuilding and unity. While the IESF expressed a desire to mitigate the impact on Ukrainian players, the controversy highlights deep geopolitical divisions within the global esports governance structure and the ongoing tension between international sports neutrality and the political realities of the conflict in Ukraine.
