Create free accounthello and welcome to pocket gamer. bus's monetizer feature this is where we uh have a look at freeto playay mobile games particularly in terms of their the ways they monetize their um players so the game going to look at today is um Royal Revolt 2 from flare games and just fir it up it's actually uh been playing this game now it's been out for about two weeks normally pretty fast to load so actually one of the fastest G I've ever seen loading so that's pretty pretty impressive um so there we go this game obviously it's a sequel to the first um world Revolt um and um as we can see quite a cute style um it's a it's a as we can see here it's going to be a city it's kind of city building type game um within fixed locations in the city um and then quite elegantly integrated with the T defense game so I've been playing this for a while now so um
see where we are so this is basically here this is my kind of base area so this is effec the headquarters the throne room let's turn just turn it down a bit so basically the um upgrading this upgrades loads of other kind of um parts of of your base so my room um they have other like this Wizard's tower for spells so we have so I've upgraded some spells there um spells and also Scrolls so they kind of um two slightly different kind of offensive methods um I have a treasury chamber obviously um for keeping my treasure and Troop Academy so this is where I have various troops so um only not many unlocked at the moment so let's a look this one I've got to upgrade my tro Academy to level five to get the froster got these three and I can upgrade them let's see okay can't upgrade this one because I need the troop Academy to level five four so you can kind of see the um the um Sid throw room oh no sorry is the academy isn't it
to upgrade him I need to upgrade my troop Academy to level so you can kind of see the way these kind of things things are kind of locked um and then quickly um so there's this thing shining here this is just the league I'm playing so comparing my um activity to other players obviously bronze league is not particularly for high level players if I go in here you can see that's lasting another 20 Sun just died 22 hours to go I'm number six in whatever that means no idea um what here um the achievements participating in tournaments by by participating in tournament I can win some gems Sobe it's a good opportunity to go into the resources so there's this is kind of quite clever actually how um the game deals with with resources so in these kind of city games Clash of Clans being the obvious one quite traditional now kind of have one hard currency so hard currency is something you spend money on and then um normally two soft currencies um so uh other result resources that you if you you normally
get earn those by playing the game but also if you want to buy some more you then use the hard currency to convert into them um C CL actually has three launch with two but has three but kind of a one hard currency two soft currencies is is pretty standard so in this but in this case um in Royal Revol 2 Royal Revolt 2 there's um slight modification so the main soft currency is gold um so we can see here this is something that's becoming more much more popular um that is what I call a percentage fill um kind of economic system so my treasure chamber has a certain capacity and at any point in it would have a certain amount of gold and then what I can do is I can buy um I don't buy a fixed amount so um it's not like one gem equals 100 gold it would depend on um how big my treasure treasure chamber is and how much treasure I've got in there so I can't actually fill at 25%
but I can buy I can fill 50% of my treasure chamber and buy and use 58 gems or I can fill three quars of it for 105 or I can do 100% fill for 132 so this is something I've been looking at um some articles on Pocket Gamer in our monetizer column looking about how the exchange rate changes over games it's quite early but it's kind of interesting that obviously as the game progresses and as your treasure um capacity changes in the game actually per dollar you're paying quite different am help to do this um currency transaction um it's more for the future um and um so I'm using gold to upgrade things so these little guys these taverns they're my kind of gold creators I got two of them at the moment you see my gold going up there um and then the other thing I've got obviously the this is the hard Curr this is the gem so this is quite a nice little um graphic here so we can see here typical thing so 500 gems is £2.99 or $5 going up to 20 ,000 gems for £69.99 P
or 99.99 and also I kind of see here if I buy that one I get a worker for free so um again with the Clash of Clans typ games is a thing I've kind of uh called the third builder problem so in most of these games you get two builders for free or two two kind of characters who will construct things for you or so if I wanted to level this up um so I could actually do this I've got enough money so I'm going to unlock this Troop Frost the troop and so now one of my little oh all our workers are busy so I can't Al so I have to complete yeah just press that one so that's a worker just finished his task and now he's he's working me doing this so if I come here so all my workers are working away you see I've got three workers none available um so if I want to I can hire another worker so that be a th000 gems now I've only got 200 gems th000 gems would cost me9 $10 um
but if I spend $100 I'll get a worker for free so that's it's kind of a a way of the game kind of retailing um you and if you were going to spend $100 maybe you being bit encouraged because You' be getting this thing for free anyway um so that's the hard currency and the other currency is um is food so I have some Farms here see that filling up um and the Farms fill into my Silo so my Silo Silo gives the capacity I can have food so food interestingly because it's it's not used in the same way as gold it's used for one specific reason just a there just the refill kind of option here I can't fill half of The Silo I can just completely fill and I just get a straight um currency conversion there so um as it says there the the um bread is used to fuel my troops so I don't it's not like clut of Clans where I build an army my kind of arm is always there I'm kind of unlocking
better different variety of troops and better level of troops but I'm not using resources to create troops in the same way um other things we got an inventor Workshop here so these are oh there we go got frost so these are things I can build so let's go outside the city Our Kind a base so that's the base we've kind of seen roughly what's going on there this is all just cosmetic stuff really I mean some of these things so this is something another ruin I could build it I'm not any any Builder guys but if I wanted to I could build a Tavern there here's the obviously the walls of my castle everything's secure in there and here we have the outside area with a little kind of tent here and this is where I put build my defense is I've just been um leveling up some spikes and a barricade so if anyone wants to attack my base in a t defense thing they're going to spawn here they're going to March down here um and then I've got
some defenses so this spike thing is going to spike them barricade is going to stop them then I got all these Archer towers and a bomb Tower and they're gon to fire at them um like most T like a t defense game it's not really the um as you we'll see in a minute it's these are not really designed to completely kill the enemy because they're just you just kind of respawn soldiers um but it's basically you have a time period of which you have to destroy the castle so it's more about a time based thing um okay i' probably got some achievements here so I've unlocked the frost Tower so I get a gem reward there so you can see all these basically kind of achievements and the reward I get so the game's fairly I mean have I did spend $5 to unlock the third builder but um yeah you do get gems very regularly and as you can see now those through those two so those two guys have um finished their upgrading on these things I've got two of my three Builders left I want to use
them to something else um okay anyway let's go for battle so this is my battle this is my equipment these are the Scrolls these are the Spells I've got I've got um someone here I can I can open a third spell slot with 600 gems don't actually have 600 gems so I won't do that um and these are my troops so again I could unlock a third troop slot 400 gems don't have 400 gems moment do that the moment I've got two so look this guy here this is his name quad n6 this is it shows me a little kind of SCH schematic of his base so I can see here it's pretty well defended if I beat him I get 29,000 gold um it'll cost me 51 food bread to do it that looks like quite a difficult job not so bothered so I can just choose a new enemy spend a small amount of gold get a new enemy ah this guy so I don't earn quite as much money it's only 12,000 um but he's got one Tower so I
just I'm going to easily win this so just quickly bash into this show you show you this kind of element of the game um and a glorious Victory I hope so this is my chap here I kind of control him semi actively um and then this is kind of my resource met filling up so I'm just going to so let's full now I'm just going to yeah yeah so these are all my troops I've just spawned these are like pretty straightforward soul soldier troops I got these spells these are the Spells we saw before I've just fired them off on timers um and if I want to use these ones these ones use use the hard currency the Scrolls which I try not to use they put them there cleverly so sometimes you tap them by mistake so here's that Tower so my guys are just going to go charging in there we're going to kill that Tower I going to spawn some some um archers as well you can see that's worth one that's worth two so that's the of these slots so these guys are not directing them at all they're just going along the path I'll follow along so here we've come to this guy's Castle so here we go you see being destroyed pretty forward
there we go so even before my archers turned up we got a victory um so uh so that's just something what goes on the battle I get some Kudos points as well and some gold and some XP um so so that's kind of it really kind of seems quite simple but I think the really lovely thing about this game is is the integration so you've basically got obviously graphically looks great obviously not a 3D camera in that we can move the camera around but it's 3D Graphics you know really good art style very direct what you're doing you're kind of leveling up within here and then kind of placing items on here you can actually change this um kind of change the the path here so you can see here I've got I've used defensive structures I've used two or four these two I've got seven Towers so that's seven I've used to I can't build any more Towers but I've got four more um kind of path units I can build a more convoluted
um kind of path which in in kind of future levels be a bit more interesting so um there's my there we go so my level up as well so this is another kind of monetization thing where I can actually just level up directly um from level eight I could go to level nine by leveling up again just using hard the hard currency so basically I'm buying using hard currency to buy XP points you don't see that very much in games actually so again I think that comes back to the kind of the integration of this you have just the one hard currency you can use it for lots of different things um and just the whole tone of the game is very I think very light um and and kind of kind of Joyful um so quite how long I'll play Clash of Clans I've played for a year and a half um whether we'll get that far I don't really know but um you know certainly I've been playing every day for about two three weeks now and and uh yeah the
start of the game obviously you kind of there's quite a lot of stuff to do quite aot stuff to oh know after my throw room needs to be so there quite a lot things to do at this this stage of the game 300,000 haven't got enough gold for that yet um C you don't um so yeah so real Revolt 2 Royal Revolt 2 from flare games um I think it's going to be doing pretty well being pushed by Apple quite heavily and I think think just think very straightforward in that purchase system don't have to spend money of course I said I've only spent $5 um unlock that Builder um probably will spend a bit more I kind of think at certain stages just to kind of speed things up but U yeah good job flare games
Royal Revolt 2, developed by Flaregames, is a mobile title that integrates city-building mechanics with tower defense gameplay. The game’s primary objective is to manage a base, upgrade defensive structures and troop capabilities, and engage in tactical combat against other players. The title utilizes a freemium model, characterized by a sophisticated, multi-layered economy that deviates from traditional industry standards to encourage player spending.
The economic system centers on a hard currency, gems, and two soft currencies: gold and food. A notable feature is the "percentage fill" mechanic for resources, where players purchase varying percentages of their storage capacity rather than fixed amounts. This creates a dynamic exchange rate that fluctuates based on the player's current progression and storage capacity. Gems serve as a versatile utility, allowing players to accelerate construction, purchase experience points, unlock additional troop or spell slots, and acquire premium items like extra builders. The game employs a "third builder" incentive, where a significant one-time purchase of hard currency includes a permanent worker, effectively retailing the game’s convenience features to dedicated users.
The gameplay loop involves balancing base development—such as upgrading the throne room, troop academies, and resource generators—with offensive raids. Combat is semi-active, requiring players to deploy troops and spells along a path to destroy an opponent's castle within a set time limit. The game also incorporates social elements, such as league rankings and tournament participation, which provide gem rewards to incentivize consistent engagement.
The game demonstrates a high level of integration between its monetization strategies and core mechanics. By allowing players to use hard currency for diverse purposes—including direct experience point acquisition—the developers have created a flexible ecosystem that caters to both casual players and those willing to invest in faster progression. The title maintains a light, accessible aesthetic while offering enough strategic depth to sustain long-term player retention.
