The gaming division reported $5.45 billion in revenue for the quarter.
Microsoft’s financial results for the third quarter of fiscal year 2024 reveal a significant transformation in the company’s gaming division, characterized by substantial revenue growth fueled by acquisition-led content gains contrasted against a decline in hardware performance. Total gaming revenue reached $5.45 billion, representing a 51% year-over-year increase. This growth was almost entirely dependent on the integration of Activision Blizzard, which contributed $1.97 billion in revenue. Without the inclusion of this subsidiary, the division’s revenue would have experienced a 4% decline compared to the previous year.
The primary driver of this positive momentum was the performance of content and services, which saw a 62% year-over-year increase, with Activision Blizzard accounting for 61 points of that impact. Key titles, particularly within the Call of Duty franchise, exceeded performance expectations, and the addition of Diablo IV to the Game Pass service marked one of the company’s most successful first-party launches to date. Despite these gains, the division reported an operating loss of $350 million associated with the Activision Blizzard segment.
Conversely, the hardware segment faced significant headwinds, with revenue falling 31% to $429 million due to a lower volume of console sales. Looking ahead, Microsoft anticipates continued growth in the gaming segment for the fourth quarter, projected in the low to mid-40% range, while simultaneously forecasting further year-over-year declines in hardware revenue. While executive leadership noted record-setting metrics for game streaming hours and monthly active devices, the overall financial health of the division remains heavily tethered to the successful monetization of its newly acquired content portfolio.
