KLab
KLab’s financial results for the first quarter of 2015 demonstrate significant growth in profitability compared to the previous year, driven by the strong performance of key gaming titles. The company reported revenue of 5,637 million yen, representing a 27.4% increase over the same period in 2014. Operating profit saw a substantial surge, rising 961.5% year-over-year to 1,019 million yen. This performance was largely attributed to the success of titles such as Celestial Craft Fleet and Tales of Asteria, which helped the company achieve its second-highest revenue and operating profit levels since the third quarter of 2014.
The improvement in operating margins was supported by a disciplined approach to expenditure, specifically a 36.8% reduction in selling, general, and administrative expenses compared to the fourth quarter of 2014. This decrease was primarily due to a strategic pullback in public relations and promotional spending, as the company moved away from the high-cost television advertising campaigns utilized in the previous quarter. Despite these gains, the company recorded an extraordinary loss of 65 million yen following the early termination of the game Crystal Fantasia, which failed to meet user retention benchmarks.
Looking ahead to the second quarter of 2015, the company anticipates a contraction in financial performance, forecasting a 20% decline in revenue and a 60% drop in operating profit. This outlook is influenced by declining average revenue per user for the title Love Live! School Idol Festival and the postponement of the release of Bleach: Brave Souls from spring to summer. To mitigate these challenges, the company is focusing on ten new titles currently in development or prototyping, including four intellectual property-based games, while continuing to adhere to industry guidelines regarding user safety and transparent monetization practices.
