Revenue Surge. Sales revenue from online gaming services in Germany grew by 50% in 2020, reaching a total of 692 million euros.
The German games industry experienced a significant surge in the adoption and financial performance of online gaming services throughout 2020. As these platforms become a foundational element of the broader market, they are increasingly driving consumer engagement through cloud gaming, subscription models, and online multiplayer connectivity. This growth reflects a broader trend in the German market, which saw total industry revenue reach 8.5 billion euros in 2020, marking a 32 percent increase over the previous year.
Total sales revenue from online gaming services in Germany rose by 50 percent in a single year, reaching 692 million euros—nearly double the 353 million euros recorded in 2018. The largest submarket consists of online services for cooperative play, such as PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold, which generated 439 million euros. Subscription-based gaming services, including platforms like Xbox Game Pass and EA Play, also saw substantial growth, increasing by 44 percent to 181 million euros. Cloud gaming, while still in an early market phase, demonstrated the most rapid expansion, with sales revenue climbing 67 percent to 72 million euros.
These findings are based on data compiled by the GfK Consumer Panel, which utilizes an ongoing survey of 25,000 representative German consumers alongside retail panel data. The analysis highlights that the combination of increased service variety and shifting consumer preferences toward flexible, library-based access models is expected to sustain long-term growth. By enabling high-quality gaming experiences without the need for high-performance hardware, cloud and subscription services are effectively lowering barriers to entry and cementing their role as a primary pillar of the German digital entertainment landscape.
