Create free accounthello and welcome to the in-app inspector video where we look at the monetization of free-to-play mobile games this week we're looking at katy perry pop and we just got a text message from the from the lady herself asking us how did how we felt about the show she thought we sounded great but we had to play covers and weren't too happy about that so essentially this is the right more of your own songs she says um yeah so Katy Perry is your your best chum and you've got a they've either Rotarian or a possible impression of her I mean I'm not the world's foremost Katy Perry expert I must admit but to voice her and their presentations are very nice it's very similar to lose last game which is essentially what this is a follow-up to
which was Kim Kardashian Hollywood which made them a ton of money so you know is sort of obvious why they would want to replicate that formula I'll just turn this down a little just so Katie's voice isn't quite so loud in fact I'll just I'll just point talk to her for now oh no can't do that that's not an option have to talk I guess I am sort of using her to advance my career say that would be a rather rude of me not to answer her texts so this is essentially well against that you just got this 2d here's my character dressed as in this garish and learner as I could as I could manage what one quibble I do quite like creating ugly ugly characters but any combination of features who create someone who's essentially beautiful in every way but then i guess that sir that's show business wouldn't make it as a sort of lump and free cover map so
yeah so that the main currently here is an energy well there are there are three countries let's go through them so we got energy from left to right we have energy Katie coins and Katie gems so let's just go into this is where I haven't played this anywhere near as long as I normally would this was a bit of a rush job but um yeah so this is what you're starting out is slightly sort of the flickering light bulb slightly rundown mums garage type and type setup where you record your stir this chap with the rickshaws is topher McGillicuddy who is your one of your star assault bandmates but you recruit better band mates by networking which
I'll show you later but this is what the process of recording a song looks like this one's called amazing heart usually you apart unless they're sort of quest specific songs you have a chance to randomize them which creates some quite amusing results but this is what a general sort of mission looks like here's my guide belting out a tune so all these things cost energy and they make your song better so and and you tap each time so that's five taps that's five energy in that answered guitar solo one for reading lyrics I don't know what happens if you don't do that whether you just sort of pulled a blank or whatever there's no feedback really for any of these things than this doing play chopsticks and and bouncing this
and essentially you just you can keep doing this until your energy runs out or you can return anytime within this time at the bottom here so two hours so if you were really dedicated you can keep returning whenever your energy for energy refills to keep adding more to the track and therefore making a better track and advancing your character with their skills in various areas such as a guitar playing or whatever there's a sort of basic skill elements or rpg-like type thing where your skills upgrade as you go but ok so now you can see I've got zero energy so I'll show you what happens when you try and write too tired can't move would you like to buy pick me up so you can I've go to the store or you can go to get free money I won't show you the free money but essentially you can watch it incentivize dad but
which is fine as a system but the only issue is it's randomized as to the reward you get so sometimes you'll get energy but even then you'll only receive one but other times you'll see something sort of perfect like 10kt coins or something which is really quite useless so you'd probably have to watch a few videos if you really wanted to go anything meaningful out of it so in certain if I sad it's all good but in this one really an option um I him we go the store and and you pay for energy you can buy more energy with katie gems which is the hard cutting so that's by five then why not i only got 70 teensy haven't actually spent any money in this one which again is unusual for this serious if you go back and watch the previous ones or i've read any of the articles in the series and because this
is always attached to a much more long-form in-depth piece on Pocket Gamer dot biz and you'll see that usually I try and spend money each week because this was a lot of fast paced turn around that didn't happen this time so here you can see the range of katie gems ranging to about ninety nine dollars from about about 399 ish three dollars fifty I think um it converts to but so you see here um it's actually I've just moved my head up the way yeah that only gets you thirty gems for for that money which really isn't much especially as you see the main function it provides I'll show you hopefully now we go to somewhere more travel each time you travel it costs some cake coins but
really a negligible not enough for it to really impact anything so say let's go to Venice the usually people aren't him and a large part of the game with moving ahead is making famous friends this might be one here hey i'm christian miller did i meet you on skype right and so that's their hilarious had tinder parody they've got going on there o Network so okay here this is higher than I've seen before actually so use charm charm is the hard the to use charm you use the Kate Jones which is the hard currency but this one takes 95 and unless you're famous enough which I'm not um you can network with these people or get them on board or get them to either join your group or do perform other tasks for you you know other sort of celebrity favor type things that boost you on the ladder unless you have
charm so 95 channel so if you go if you compare that to what we were doing before which is compare that to the price of the price of the Katy gems that there 30 for about three dollars fifty sir you'd have to spend quite a lot to to make this guy your friend for example and even lower value ones are usually about 25 which is worth about 2050 so these these encounters are essentially dated to an extent no you do get Katie gems in standard play but never really in sufficient amounts to do this and so yeah that that's the my main my main quibble with it the energy does run out very quickly too but that's sort of
workable given the length of the an energy if energy was used for example to travel here I think that would present a much bigger problem but because it's only really used when you're either in a studio session or you're performing a gig or something and you're given multiple hours to return and keep adding stuff to that so that works as a system and it's not and it's not too not too obtrusive so here's the closet as well that's quickly go here to finish it off and this is very much like Kim Kardashian Hollywood and you know there are outfits you unlock and you go on and you can pay for them as here's another sort of wrong I suppose to its to its monetization there are um yeah so the more you spend and they're also soft currency ones as well which are more manageable I bought those yellow shoes and this particularly hideous shirt of
his because I was trying to make him look as terrible as possible I think the other thing I've done to you about a job considering the tools and I'm supposing he does look pretty pretty awful so I'm pretty proud of that but yeah so this is another way in which you can spend money and you know there's no real complaints or issues you can have this isn't a fat engage balancing is just purely cosmetic which if you want to do that feel free not anything I'm going to but doesn't you know it doesn't unbalanced anything doesn't upset the the game and why it does say yeah like I say the only the oh my only real christens with it is very tight with its hard currency and also that um the things that require hard currency require quite a lot of it like talking to people it costs nearly 100 and I've never had any we're approaching that but you know on balance those things aren't required to make progress and you know making progress is very
easy you know there's always things to got your to-do list here just tap to fly out to the location type some more to do it swipe around very simple very soft unobjectionable really other than maybe the the idea that fame is all about just you know to make friends in this world you have to spend money and you know you're just sort of hopping on the back of other people's success is to try to find your own but I guess maybe that is the reality of the the grim reality of being famous which is why you know most of us are not but anyway and so yeah that's thanks a lot for watching that's in app inspector on katy perry pop a new one next week hopefully and so yeah we do these every week to go alongside the
bigger in peace and there'll be a link to that in the description if you want to read more so yeah thanks a lot for watching Cheers
Katy Perry Pop, a mobile simulation game developed by Glu Mobile, functions as a thematic successor to the studio’s highly successful Kim Kardashian: Hollywood. The game centers on a narrative-driven progression system where players navigate the music industry, record songs, and build a celebrity network. The core gameplay loop relies on energy-based mechanics, where players expend energy to complete studio sessions and performances, with the option to return over several hours to finish tasks as energy replenishes.
The monetization strategy utilizes a three-tier currency system: energy, soft currency (Katy Coins), and hard currency (Katy Gems). While energy management is generally balanced and non-intrusive, the game’s reliance on hard currency for social interactions presents a significant barrier. Networking with high-profile characters often requires substantial amounts of Katy Gems—sometimes costing nearly 100 gems per interaction—which are difficult to accumulate through standard gameplay. Although incentivized advertisements offer a path to earn resources, the randomized rewards are often insufficient to facilitate meaningful progress, creating a steep paywall for players seeking to optimize their social standing.
Beyond social progression, the game incorporates cosmetic monetization through an in-game closet. Players can purchase various outfits using either soft or hard currency, though these items remain purely aesthetic and do not impact game balance. Ultimately, while the game provides an accessible and straightforward experience for casual players, its aggressive pricing for social networking features highlights a design philosophy that equates fame with significant financial investment. The title effectively mirrors the mechanics of its predecessor, prioritizing celebrity-branded engagement while maintaining a relatively low barrier to entry for basic gameplay.
