Identifying their triggers is crucial for improving player experience.
Key Issue. The study aimed to analyze biometric triggers behind gamer 'tilt' and 'rage quitting'.
HyperX partnered with the adidas-ASU Center for Engagement Science Lab at Arizona State University to conduct a study focused on identifying the physiological and psychological triggers of negative player behaviors, specifically "tilting" and "rage quitting." The primary objective of the research was to analyze biometric data to develop methods for improving player wellness and performance, ultimately seeking to prevent emotional outbursts during competitive gaming sessions.
The study involved 45 experienced gamers who participated in five to six-hour sessions playing titles such as League of Legends, Valorant, and Call of Duty. Researchers utilized wristband health monitors and webcams to collect continuous data on heart rates, skin conductivity, eye movements, and facial expressions. This biometric information, combined with in-game performance metrics, was processed through a machine learning algorithm. The findings demonstrated that the algorithm could successfully predict the onset of "tilt" in a subject 15 to 20 minutes before the behavior occurred.
HyperX supported the initiative by providing professional-grade gaming equipment to ensure the research environment mirrored the conditions experienced by professional esports athletes. While the financial terms of the sponsorship remain undisclosed, the success of this project has encouraged HyperX to pursue further collaborations with sports science institutions. The company intends to continue exploring how to identify and mitigate the physical and psychological stressors that affect gamers, signaling a broader industry interest in applying data-driven performance science to the esports sector.
