The total market reached 2.81 billion euros.
The German games industry experienced significant growth in 2015, driven largely by the emergence of hybrid toys, also known as toys-to-life products. These collectibles, which utilize technologies like near-field communication to integrate physical figures into digital gaming experiences, represent a successful convergence of traditional play and digital entertainment. The market for these hybrid toys in Germany surged by 53 percent, reaching 72 million euros in 2015, up from 47 million euros the previous year.
This growth occurred within the context of a broader expansion of the German computer and video games market, which grew by 4.5 percent to a total of 2.81 billion euros. Within this total, the games console segment contributed 825 million euros, reflecting a 6.5 percent increase. Furthermore, the industry saw a notable rise in revenue from virtual goods and add-on content, which grew by 18 percent to 562 million euros, while game subscription revenue increased by 5 percent to 145 million euros.
The findings are based on data compiled by GfK Entertainment and the GfK Consumer Panel. The hybrid toy market analysis utilized sales data from over 2,000 retail outlets, covering more than 70 percent of the German market. The broader industry figures were derived from an ongoing, representative survey of 25,000 consumers, providing a comprehensive view of purchasing and usage habits across the German population. These statistics underscore the industry's capacity for innovation and the increasing integration of physical and digital media.
