Deconstructor of Fun
The game successfully connected Asian and Western mobile gaming markets.
Cookie Run: Kingdom, developed by Devsisters, offers a case study in how a casual-leaning card-battling RPG can succeed in both Asian and Western markets. The game generated roughly $225 million in revenue from about 22 million downloads, with around half of that coming from South Korea and meaningful traction following its September 2021 US launch. The broader Cookie Run series reached more than 28 million downloads and nearly $290 million in 2021, while the game hit number one in US RPG downloads and sixteenth in revenue that year.
Its appeal rests on a blend of cuteness and genre mashup: a polished 2D tween-animated art style that attracts adult Western fans, a richly built dessert-themed universe, and a contrast between epic fantasy and sweet cookie characters. The core loop combines card-battling RPG with Build & Harvest simulation, pairing early user growth and retention with late-stage monetization. Players move through a honeymoon phase, a spend-oriented build phase, and a PvP and guild-focused master phase. Predicted 30-day retention is strong at about 14.6% in the US and 21.4% in Korea.
Monetization is deliberately generous. The gacha offers a 19.3% Epic rate against an industry norm below 10%, a roughly 20% chance of a 20-piece Combo Drop, and guaranteed pity. Store packs are low-priced and purchase-limited, rarely exceeding $35, with packs under $10 making up about 80% of December 2021 US iOS revenue. Weaknesses include a store that overwhelms new players, simplified ingredient leveling, and a largely automated PvP arena.
Publishing success drew on the Devsisters IP, with 150 million series downloads, a TikTok-driven surge in October 2021, well-known voice actors, KOL campaigns, and localized social media supported by official FanKits that fuel user-generated content. Brand crossovers with KFC, Sonic, and Hello Kitty showed no significant effect on downloads or purchases. The central lesson is that lovable characters, organic fan sharing, and emotional connection to the IP outperform paid advertising and drive players to pay for love.
