HBO's Streaming Apps Set Download Records for Game of Thrones Premiere

Individually, both applications experienced substantial growth during the event. HBO NOW saw its daily installs climb to 171,000, a 14 percent increase over its prior peak, while HBO GO reached a new record of 51,000 installs, marking an 11 percent rise. These figures are derived from Store Intelligence data and focus specifically on mobile platforms, excluding other access points such as smart TVs, game consoles, and desktop browsers.

These record-setting figures are particularly notable given the broader context of slowing growth for the network's streaming services. Prior to the season seven premiere, quarterly download data indicated a downward trend, with worldwide installs for the second quarter of 2017 declining by 50 percent compared to the same period in 2016. Despite this general deceleration in new user acquisition, the data underscores the continued power of flagship original content to drive significant, albeit concentrated, spikes in platform engagement as HBO navigates an increasingly competitive streaming landscape dominated by rivals like Netflix.
