The organization struggled to achieve profitability since its initial public offering.
Guild Esports, a London-listed organization co-owned by David Beckham, has finalized the sale of its assets to the California-based investment firm DCB Sports. This transaction marks a definitive exit for the organization from its previous operational structure following years of persistent financial instability. Under the terms of the deal, DCB Sports has acquired 100% of the company’s assets, including the Guild brand, in exchange for assuming liabilities exceeding £2 million and providing a £100,000 cash payment to the original entity.
The sale follows a period of severe financial distress for the organization, which struggled to achieve profitability since its 2020 initial public offering. Despite aggressive cost-cutting measures that reduced expenses by 38% between 2022 and 2023, the company reported an operating loss of £1.68 million for the six months ending March 31, 2024, with accumulated losses reaching £26.55 million. By the end of that period, the company held only £17,000 in cash reserves, rendering it unable to continue as a going concern.
The acquisition represents a significant loss for shareholders who invested during the company’s 2020 IPO, which raised £20 million at a £41.2 million valuation. The organization’s financial burden was exacerbated by a high-cost influencer agreement with David Beckham, which guaranteed substantial annual payments regardless of performance. Following the asset sale, CEO Jasmine Skee resigned, and the remaining entity plans to rebrand as Cassel Capital PLC. For DCB Sports, the acquisition serves as an entry point into the esports sector, adding to its existing portfolio of traditional sports and entertainment investments.
