The Esports Advocate
The company is moving away from capital-intensive software development and esports events.
Gfinity, a UK-based, publicly traded gaming services company, has announced a complete exit from the esports sector. The company cited a soft market and a lack of profitable growth opportunities as the primary drivers for this strategic pivot. Moving forward, Gfinity intends to shift its focus toward core web offerings for gamers, explicitly moving away from capital-intensive business models such as event production and software development.
As part of this restructuring, Gfinity is divesting a majority stake in its wholly owned subsidiary, Athlos. The company has agreed to sell 72.5% of Athlos to the London-based Tourbillon Group UK Ltd, while retaining a minority interest of 27.5%. Financial data from 2022 highlights the financial strain on the subsidiary, which recorded a pretax loss of £500,000 ($620,000 USD) on £400,000 ($496,000 USD) in revenue.
The decision to abandon esports operations marks a significant shift for the organization, which had previously reported a 26% year-over-year revenue increase to £4.11 million ($5.12 million USD) for the six-month period ending December 31, 2022. Despite this revenue growth, the company has struggled with consistent profitability, having posted a net loss in every six-month reporting period since its public listing in December 2014. The total impact on the company's workforce remains undisclosed.
