During the first ten months of the PlayStation 5’s lifecycle, from November 2020 through August 2021, consumer data indicates a clear preference for physical media over digital downloads. Analysis of Games Sales Data (GSD) across six key territories—France, Italy, Benelux, Iberia, the Nordics, and Oceania—reveals that physical software sales consistently outperformed digital counterparts. By the end of this period, approximately two million physical units had been sold, representing a 51% lead over digital sales volume.
The data shows that physical software attach rates remained higher than digital rates throughout the console's initial launch phase. While digital attach rates never exceeded 1.0, physical attach rates frequently surpassed that threshold, particularly from June 2021 onward. This trend highlights a divergence from the broader industry shift toward digital-only consumption, with the gap between physical and digital sales widening as the console matured.
Several factors contribute to this preference for boxed games. The high $70 price point for new titles encourages consumers to seek the tangible value of a physical product, while the desire to build a physical library remains a significant driver. Additionally, the ability to lend or resell physical discs provides utility that digital downloads currently lack. The relative scarcity of a deep digital back catalogue for the new hardware also likely bolstered the performance of physical releases during this early adoption window. The findings are based on GSD tracking, which monitors boxed sales across 23 countries and digital sales across 49, providing a comprehensive view of major publisher performance during the console's first year.
