Jaakko Suominen's study examines how reviews in MikroBitti, a Finnish computer and gaming magazine, helped construct historical awareness of digital games between 1984 and 2010. Drawing on a qualitative content analysis of 640 reviews, sampled from two issues per year, the work investigates how reviewers reference other games, genres, designers, and popular media such as film, television, comics, and literature. The central argument is that game criticism functioned as a means by which the Finnish gaming community came to understand its own past, a process the author traces across more than two decades of changing editorial practice.
The study's findings show a clear evolution. Early reviews from 1984 and 1985 were brief and largely non-analytical, but writing became more detailed and historically aware after Niko Nirvi joined the magazine in 1986, with his lively style and historical framing becoming a lasting influence on Finnish game journalism. Internal game-historical references, including sequels, shared developers, and comparisons to "classics," emerged as a key mechanism for building a shared historical consciousness. The author also documents shifts in editorial policy, rating systems, and device focus, moving from home computers to PC, console, and mobile platforms. The preliminary hypothesis that game-to-game references would grow while references to other media would decline was only partially supported; the author instead concludes that self-understanding of gaming history deepened over time.
Intertextual and intermedial references to films, comics, literature, and mythology served to contextualize games, classify genres, and convey atmosphere, and the use of history-oriented vocabulary such as "classics," "pioneers," and "retro" grew over the period. The study finds that game criticism blends art critique with technical evaluation, positioning reviews as a useful resource for studying how digital game culture interprets its past. Its scope is Finnish, centered on a single magazine across 1984 to 2010.
