Create free accounthello and welcome to pocket gaming busy's youtube channel i'm john jordan and this is our first time user experience playlist so as you can see the game we are just loading up is stormfall so that's again been out for a while the reason we are looking at it now is as you can see it has a new star as a kind of celebrity marketing uh kind of thing so it's megan fox pointing her finger at us and telling us to uh what we can't see because it has push notifications on it so this is kind of interesting so push notifications are pretty important for retention and notification and getting people engaged in the game whether you want it whether you want to ask players this early on whether they want notifications is another matter i think it's a little bit impolite probably you want to get them through the tutorial before you ask them
if they want push notifications because obviously you do want them to sign up to push notifications so you probably want them to be a bit happy that they're playing your game and feel like there's they're going to gain something from doing it um anyway we'll go we'll say okay so the most hardcore mmo strategy game that's a a matter of debate anyway so we can kind of see now play with friends and get a gift so 10 horsemen looks like cavalry we don't really know what that means in the context of the game you know well we have a million horsemen that know players are guests all of them in the polarim idea um a bit of friction there probably people aren't going to go in with facebook um at the moment i would imagine maybe they will i don't know we'll just go as a guest welcome to stormfall so here we go i don't know quite what outfit that is but that is her outfit anyway so um you can see you're gonna go to tutorials this is very much
uh inspired by game war so boost construction and other activities when you can remember that five minutes i said um it hasn't actually been successful on mobile yet as it has been on facebook but um tends to have these these kind of similar strategy games so i'm sure they don't need to kind of copy game of war from that point of view but it's kind of similar to that kind of menu based strategy so typically going through the tutorial in these kind of games is literally just tapping on stuff you learn quickly oh my lord you haven't spread your skill gameplay in terms of doing anything you're just generally tapping on stuff to earn rewards and advance more quickly building stuff and tapping they're building a mine here start tap on it you can probably speed it up to boost construction open the action panel it's taking some time because you learned quickly my lord you know again
gain not rewarding a one minute speed up so that's useful with these games you take time to build things and you have these build up these speed ups you don't speed them up squeezing currency you have to use items that's another way they have kind of a deeper monetization than you know what two skulls are so what's megan want to do now she was just going to reward she wants to build a warehouse so just going through it's kind of interesting all these games do this very similarly where you're not really sure what you're doing actually but you're just tapping in to a degree it's kind of a not really term we use anymore um a skinner box but it's that literally just people noticing what they're doing now they just kind of um came to the situation where they just
like told an arrow to this tap on here tap on here another thing's really much he's changing the context of the game um it's not like i'm my face is changing very much i mean there's things happening there so now i've got a different arrow select a hero um i want me to select uh gracious which one was i with that um so my hero is now wherever she is name my hero it is time to give your hero name okay it's interesting so sometimes they have a random option there's a good random option at this point it does actually force you to type something okay all right another reward lost arts let you develop your castle
and unlock new okay this is like a technology tree speeding up for free dragon swooping around me claim my reward for my reward of century house start doing this entry house i'm building it i'm gonna do it for free speed it up i've leveled up got another one of those mini things some more skulls and i'm going to get a reward i mean just see it's it's interesting must work because all these games do exactly this gathered i am not the kind of another way of doing it but clearly they make the ones that are successful make tons of money and i guess the other thing is once you have once you have games that are successful then you're kind of paying for that audience that audience isn't is then that's what they expect they expect to go through this process because that's how the games that they've played in the past have
got them into the game so dragon we didn't want a dragon that we said take three outside today that's interesting now my arrows are just gone so i don't know what to do probably press on that one i haven't selected the dragon art yet um i'm discovering dragon art yet okay can i do that not enough resources okay so that was interesting um suddenly i didn't know what to tap on and then the game kind of stopped oh goodness me well i don't know what he is oh i'm just chopping him in my house he's just getting there okay i'm out of mana you can wait to replenish or return to battle later or when it's new satellites so i guess that is a bit of some sort of gameplay so immediately it's interesting that the arrows are gone and um
okay i'm lost now again i can hire units twenty come on i can tell what to do i just have to visit okay tell you to visit it and then just leave you not be able to do anything there any
as you can see these kind of games are quite complex so there's at the top of the screen there's some resources three different resources looks like there are four resources there's a some currents the hard currency in the top right is um you can see my leveling up my xp okay so megan is to there tell me to build too far but not getting the arrows and then there's this stuff bouncing around down the bottom here okay this is quite interesting this is telling me these my farms tell me what level they're on isn't it if you can zoom in here and it shows me the levels i guess my storage is full okay there's like a bouncy gift thing down here and down the bottom there's all manner of many stuff i'm not gonna go into um i've gone too many by mistake there come on then uh i'll collect reward build a farm i guess the arrows are still there if i can find them but just not quite as in my faces before which is kind of i guess what you want in a tutorial one of the big problems with
tutorials is that as soon as the tutorial stops and it's left on your own and often people know what to do and then that's actually when they delete the game so it's quite a built-in mind so it's quite an important thing to kind of stop you know reduce the hand holding up to level five yeah my reward built two term houses because particularly these kind of games where they pay a lot of money to pay a lot of money user acquisition to get the download they need to be pretty strong but once they got down there we've got someone to please pay through the tutorial play through the tutorial um the most important thing for these kind of games is to get people into a alliance or guild or whatever they call
their community mobile strike the other game from machine zone very quick at getting you into what attempted to get you into it otherwise it all stops you can't see any other things also we had megan fox kind of in our faces so to speak um and quite quickly that that dialed down i'm sure she'll still appear at some point um check the guide okay well this is the most important bit that's the guide there we go voice will tell me that i actually have to instagram it's interesting they've got an instagram here
i'm not being more of a kind of female social report okay i don't really think i need to probably go into this more so the whole point of the first image experience is just to go through the initial tutorial actually as this goes this was not as confusing as some of them um just these games are quite confusing so it's quite hard um and they want to get you into it quickly um actually the interesting thing here is graphically this game is uh while not a 3d shooter or anything like that it's quite a lot going on so the it's a kind of typical isometric background that you'll be building up and leveling up but then it's kind of these interesting there's kind of there's someone floating down a river in a barrel obviously inspired by tolkien he's throwing relax of that he's gone though um there's just people moving around that gives it quite a nice sense of stuff going on
obviously the dragon wherever he's gone in this control trolling people and yeah it's just kind of nice so i'm trying to go there eagles so it's kind of nice i think actually this is good for these games because they're not they really are they could be run for a spreadsheet so they tend to focus on the look of the game very much but obviously we are visual a visual species so it's kind of nice to have stuff going on even if it is cosmetic so anyway thanks for watching uh don't forget to subscribe so you do a lot this first time user experience analysis on games and for games we play a bit more in depth we go into bit more into the monetization and the user experience so if that's kind of thing you want do subscribe thanks for watching and we hope to see you
The mobile strategy game Stormfall: Rise of Balur utilizes a highly structured First Time User Experience (FTUE) to onboard players, heavily relying on celebrity integration and repetitive, task-oriented mechanics. The primary objective of this onboarding process is to guide new users through the game’s complex menu-based systems while establishing a loop of resource collection, building construction, and reward claiming. By featuring actress Megan Fox as an in-game tutor, the developers aim to increase engagement and provide a recognizable face to navigate the initial tutorial phase.
The gameplay loop during the FTUE is characterized by high-frequency, low-agency interactions where players are prompted to tap on specific UI elements to advance. This design mirrors established industry standards for mobile strategy titles, focusing on "skinner box" mechanics where constant rewards—such as speed-ups, currency, and experience points—are used to reinforce player behavior. The tutorial transitions from heavy hand-holding, using directional arrows to dictate every move, to a more open-ended state once the player reaches a certain level. This transition is identified as a critical friction point, as the sudden removal of guidance often leads to player churn if the user feels lost.
Technically, the game employs an isometric visual style that incorporates cosmetic animations, such as moving characters and dragons, to provide a sense of life to what is essentially a spreadsheet-driven management system. While the game requires significant user acquisition investment, the onboarding strategy prioritizes getting players into social structures like alliances or guilds to ensure long-term retention. Ultimately, the FTUE serves as a necessary, albeit complex, bridge to familiarize players with the game’s deep monetization and resource management systems, ensuring they understand the core loop before being left to manage their own progression.
