Create free accounthello and welcome to Pocket Gamer not busies youtube channel this is john jordan and we're in our first time user experience playlist so as you can see we've just spied up a game from nexon and immediately it's asking us if we won't push notifications so this is a very bad thing if it for two reasons one it's just I think you can call it this what this input is impolite it's impolite for the first thing you do there's a game you might know a lot about it you might not know anything about it the first thing you get is your push notifications now put in notifications are important for the developer so push notifications are a good way and potentially at least a good way of bringing people back into the game telling them stuff's going on in the game they should be excited about come back into the game but this little pop-up is actually quite interesting so this is I'm playing on our iPad this is the official iOS push notification
prompt and you can only trigger this once so what you're seeing now with smarter developers is that they will have an internal splash screen or go something like you want to be notified when cool stuffs happening in the game and it will have them say yes or not at the moment you can show that internal game screen as many times as you like so obviously people say may not be a good time now or I want to play the game a bit more to see if I if I enjoy it they they can that screen can be refreshed you know multiple times but this screen this is the official screen app will only let you show this prompt one so if I say don't allow now I don't have any other way of getting push notifications so this is why it's really bad thing to be doing this straight away because I'm gonna go don't allow I don't know about this game so so basically the next one is now lost its chance to send me anything any push defecated about this game so in terms of retention which is what everyone cares about really poor okay so this is no game very well known
we have an error message there than all that was about the first again the first thing I see is a purchase offer so purchasing offers retailing offers are great this one or get premium cards and free gems but I'm not even played the game yet I can't believe anyone's gonna click on this it's really odd another odd thing and this is a very Asian thing to this game is developed in Korea be very successful in Korea have to say if you look at the left hand bottom left hand corner there's little tick things don't show me this again now most people with advertising to get a never like this which is not nice in any way it's not yeah there's no reason for you to see again why would I want to see it again it's kind of odd so that this the option for developers should be to only show up on today if people want to see it more they can you know opt-in there's this kind of opt-in opt-out situation with advertising whether it's external advertising or in-game advertising and developers you know the smallest thing is the first impression this is why we go through this quite convoluted first
time user experience playlist thing because first time experience is really matter okay so here are some incredible tales is the game unreal for games it's going to look nice as developer is napped games and the publishers nexon career as we said so again login so this is ok it's kind of kind of fine up login for facebook google or just guess that's not too bad i suppose this case we've guess probably to be anything so we've got this cutscene stuff which i think personally is one this doesn't look very nice and two in keswick cutscene so we can skip that and here we go so we're starting we're seeing straight away or getting bit of some montant Fredrik we've got a very power up figure so this often happens in Asian RPGs where you start the game in a very advanced state so it's off to encourage you to if you
keep playing this game you'll get a character like this but maybe what's gonna happen is we're gonna play this character we're going to do a tiny bit of game playing them going to have all this taken away from us which again I'm not terribly keen about it's like you know be giving someone with some toys and taking them away and say will you can you can get them again if you want to play for a long period of time not necessarily holistic anyways this is the tutorial so we can see of this is an RPG it's got an arrow show you where to go not terribly keen on these kind of soft controls but again I mean quite popular in asian games the game does have when we get to the tutorial there is an altar play up and say don't actually have to do this lets up which again is very Asian but that's an innovation which is happening now in lots of Western developed games having also plays pretty important for long-term retention so people want to play is it this is a different kind of game from diablos it's not a kind of game where you care about
the game babe amia suppose internet dabbler even you care about the metagame and leveling up which is audible for use have been about so I'm blocking here supposedly exactly I'm learning all this stuff I'm gonna also place our separate I'm just going to zoom in through it yeah and the reason is it's almost impossible for a game you know some games now people have been playing for about games for 23 years you know you don't you don't really want to be going through just bashing minions oh where am I going need an area um you know you want to care about living up and getting new items and probably equipping magic and evolving staff and too many enemies use the skills only see just pressing these buttons there's a timer on the buttons big enormous attacks as being
some big Hoss see dat Larry meet you up the stairs we go Bring Me boss at some point okay also battle so say there we go so now at all to battle zone all that stuff in top told me before I don't need to do think i guess i can press some of these superpower power up things i wanted here comes the boss then very happy dizzy the constipate here they just fight nasty mane so that's the tutorial or the cool bit of the tutorial again what it'll be so now i can create a character so i can have is the kind of classes of those who've got enormous he's got an enormous enormous his insufficient to describe his sword so he's like a malay she's a feeler the magic age thing she
these dual swords in his you wanna have everything of the night apparently they looking for everyone he's got a side ok it's dead with a magic one ok set a nickname ok please enter thinking of them listen economies so this is again a very odd thing um particular comes from aging RPGs I've noticed that you can only enter so no characters opportunities but tends to happen because asian after its different so you tend to not to have so many gifts so 10 characters in Chinese or Korean is a lot and they sell their I assume this happens if set up their server to only allow this for career and then they can't really go back and recode it but it is annoying you know there's no reason why you couldn't have 20 characters not until 100 characters but it's just a bit rubbish really again this is all could be saying this
all the first time user experience you know anything like this is any friction in the system is it neatly gonna make me want to go and go along it up I install it okay so log into we see the daily logging things is now every female game should have this I'm certain what they won logging I get some gold this is interesting even again I've not got it there has been sent to my inbox so they'd have to go to my inbox to get it seems a bit fun we're going to go to another tutorial this is the short tutorial on the metagame obviously or wheat now we're going to go back into here gross farm okay so you can see I'm none of that big monster stuff going on in this is just small monster stuff do the first mission so I'm going to use up some energy and what's going on here sand like okay so going a bit more think skippable stuff so here Here I am where's my water button why can I not
what I might have your thing and Hitler thing is you're doing anything so off she goes Lucy the moment they simply call sax I had in the initial tutorial block towers leggings 1110 and level 27 off anyway and chains big spider pair up spies good loot so that this is that like the game base this is why well also it's not particularly interesting in the animals as a nice of stuff but what you care about is set for wing and there's
ethylene ok and now she's gone from option I've leveled up good receive something in my inbox solace okay equipment strain to the shop purchase a car is a car based system get ARMA card so I guess we're all kind of most RPGs now most games even don't use cards using like a card type system with rarities so uncommon common rare epic whatever the things you can equipment you can attach and then you can level up using other card so whenever you incall Gacha system from the japanese where you basically randomly get getting unlocking boxes of random stuff that was quite nicely stuffing and backgrounds with a battle them back we randomly get different cars you can then combine them so whatever you get is useful you could
have used in some way even is not the direct thing you want so good equipment couldn't button there so i went with quick the stuff i got okay so that's a passion way where those does the diesel we put the a piss yourself again the screen here is not great i think the user excuse it interfaces a bit pc like and just not a bit too much going on I mean RPGs tend to be a bit like this asian Apogee's tend to be very much like this this game is not a pc game at all it's a mobile game but it's them as sometimes the issue you have often western games going to age you don't seem hard core enough for a detailed nuffin agent i'll be used tend to seem a bit too keke so I've done that you can see ya see it's a uncommon its defensive it reduces debuff duration by point 5 / % reduces freeze duration by 1% not very powerful big equipment there so there I am so
it's kind of that's the power of it unreal as much fun with my new equipment on there's a skill or can they were doing to that so I know what do i do on that haven't got any skill points I've registered flame explosion don't know what that does okay so you can see I'm a bit lost here was that one bundle Bennett okay to leave that alone oh goodness me so there we go got this other day yet again oh and again so that's three me telling things I've got a bit silly to one of my actually doing now so often you have other there's problem it's your toes where it handheld you through everything and then it just drops you out and just like Oh what do I do now just as I get to the adventure bit I supposed away let's do 20 another one then Oh something else this other thing
just a bit too much goin on here I think at the early stages of the game where I've not even done the second mission so I don't see the rewards i might get i suppose i can use up some of my energy up i go to auto so it's fine firing you too so here's the bus chappy all right
baddies women nope now he goes up he goes again think is a little bit probably these RPGs to see it however kind of interesting they make the enemies is just 70 RPGs was there's just not enough variation really in the enemies i just become very particular plane autoplay you might argue but just become very cookie guy doesn't really matter what they are someone needs to kind of reinvent enemies i'm still go I've leveled up level three so that's good job see an early stage of the game I want to feel like I'm completing stuff for my used to combat now I'm going to home okay so this is wrong and learn about skills that's when I couldn't do anything before so I've got some skill points and different okay so I've got offensive wisdom filtration fatality okay looks like I'm pressing on the fence press the passive affect my ability do you see that so already I'm saying this is gonna be complicated
that's this is bit too finicky really have to say Oh I know what I'm that reset things about we can see anyways different skills I've got four different attack defense counter attack combo ones ok well I think we'll leave it this tends to be I mean I'm not trying to be particularly me into this game as I say it's been very successful in the career it's been the top grossing game there for most of 2015 but sometimes this can be the problem for games that do particularly well in a particular environment they just become very honed to that audience we've got to say some games in Korea can't be popular in the rest of the world or something and so
there's lots of Korean games that have been popular elsewhere and but be Korean audits tinted a bit more like the Chinese and Japanese audience then the Western audience often completing for RPGs so and you can understand why these are very complex game so the developer does a bit of you know auti localization but doesn't really gut the game and rebuild it for the Western audience and there's no reason necessarily that they should do that the Queen Maki is a very big lucrative market and maybe that's all they need to be a successful there is enough seems I've lost the game I've got into some tall um but I do think that as just as the market becomes more competitive that Asian developers are going to have to think of it more seriously about how they deal with Western markets and particularly in just I think you can have a lot more depth I think that's kind of something that will look to see for for Western developers to go into a lot more depth in their
RPGs but the way you introduce the depth is important and to have all this stuff and I've you know I went to help a lot of Asian RPGs but i have i have started love Asian RPGs and basically after about a week I just get confused about what's going on and that good because I'm a bit thick but equally it's because there is a there is a a high level of them kind of requirement if we play this pretty much all the time probably going on forms to what's going on so yeah so anyway um we'll see how it gets on thanks for watching the video so do not this first time user experience stuff because it is the most important part of the game as if any developer to watching that's clearly what you should be getting your game out watching how people play the first five minutes you should move recording them you should be and you have to get them through that first five minutes and get them having a good time and not confuse them and not give them push notification pop-ups the first
thing they see so thanks for watching guys get to subscribe if you want to see more of this stuff with you a lot of customers experience videos so yeah thanks watching hep c you can see
The first-time user experience (FTUE) of Nexon’s mobile RPG, Heroes of Incredible Tales (HIT), serves as a case study in the friction points that can hinder player retention during the critical onboarding phase. Developed by Nat Games for the Korean market, the title demonstrates how design choices optimized for one cultural audience may create significant barriers for Western players. The analysis highlights that the game’s initial presentation is marred by aggressive, poorly timed prompts, such as immediate requests for push notification permissions and premature sales offers, which prioritize developer goals over user engagement and trust.
Key findings indicate that the game relies on complex, high-friction systems that can overwhelm new players. Upon starting, users are thrust into an advanced state of gameplay that is subsequently stripped away, a design choice that risks alienating players by removing their sense of progression. While the inclusion of auto-play features is noted as a standard and effective innovation for long-term retention in mobile RPGs, the interface remains cluttered and overly reminiscent of PC-based systems. Furthermore, technical limitations, such as restrictive character naming conventions, and a lack of clarity regarding metagame mechanics—like skill point allocation and inventory management—contribute to a confusing user journey.
The analysis concludes that while HIT achieved significant commercial success in Korea, its lack of deep localization for Western markets poses a challenge for global expansion. The core argument is that developers must prioritize the first five minutes of gameplay to ensure clarity and enjoyment. By failing to streamline the onboarding process and reducing unnecessary complexity, developers risk losing players before they can appreciate the game's depth. The findings emphasize that successful mobile titles must balance technical complexity with an intuitive, hand-held introduction to ensure long-term player retention.
