The Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) has unveiled the structural framework for its inaugural Esports Nations Cup 2026, a biennial international competition hosted in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Positioned as an alternative to the previously proposed Esports Olympic Games, the tournament aims to foster national representation by prohibiting the use of existing professional club rosters. Instead, teams will be composed of top eligible players selected to represent their respective nations, emphasizing merit and national identity over established club structures.
The competition will feature 16 distinct game titles, supported by major industry partners including Electronic Arts, Tencent, Ubisoft, and Chess.com. The tournament format is designed to accommodate 24 to 48 national teams for team-based titles and 32 to 128 players for solo events. Qualification will be determined through a hybrid model, with half of the participants receiving direct invitations based on competitive performance throughout the preceding esports season. To ensure meaningful participation, all qualifying teams and players are guaranteed a minimum of three matches during the finals.
While the EWCF has outlined these foundational rules, the specific mechanisms for regional and national qualification remain under development. The organization has yet to clarify whether it will establish an independent qualification system or collaborate with existing international esports federations. The event continues to face scrutiny from international human rights organizations regarding the broader context of Saudi Arabian government-backed sports initiatives, which critics frequently associate with efforts to improve the nation's global image.
